Canada 2015: It's end of the road for Super Falcons

Super Falcons of Nigeria has crashed out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. They lost 0-1 to the USA in Vancouver today and finished fourth in the Group D. 
‎Abby Wambach scored the only goal of the game just before half time. Efforts by our women’s national team to equalise and even score goals to proceed in the competition proved abortive. They exit the tournament having drawn with Sweden and lost 2-0 to Australia.
Super Falcons coach Edwin Okon has blamed match officials for his side’s defeat. Okon,who ignored US coach Jill Ellis’ offer of a handshake after the match told reporters that the officiating was poor.
“It’s been a good one and we thank God for the game. We thank God for the officiating in the competition. In the first and second halves, we thank the referee. That’s all. There was frustration from the officiating.”
*sobs uncontrollably*.

She's a Champ! Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala named BBC Women’s Player of the Year.

The plaudits keep rolling in for Nigerian soccer star, Asisat Oshoala. The Super Falcons forward has been named the BBC Women’s Player of the Year. She received the award yesterday after a friendly game between the Nigeria and Canada senior women teams at the Kia Training Ground, Toronto.

“I would like to say thank you to the BBC, to my fans around the world and to everyone who voted. I feel very happy and appreciated. It’s a very good thing for me and also motivation for the World Cup. I had a very good 2014 and had the opportunity of going to the under-20s Women’s World Cup with Nigeria and also won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot so I think maybe that added to the reason why people voted for me.” The award winning player said.

The Liverpool Ladies’ striker scooped the prize ahead of Veronica Boquete of Spain, Germany’s Nadine Kessler, Scotland’s Kim Little and Brazilian forward Marta.

Recall that the 20-year old was named the African Woman Player of the Year and African Youth Player at the Glo-CAF African Football Awards in Lagos in January, she was also awarded the Most Valuable Player and top goal scorer of the Tournament at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons are ready to soar in Canada.

African Champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria were (and still are) in high spirits yesterday as they arrived Canada  ahead of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The team left Abuja on Wednesday night aboard an Air France airline and touched down Paris after a five and a half-hour trip.
The seven-time African title winners have resumed training  ahead of the seventh women international championship which holds from June 6 to July 5. Nigeria is drawn alongside USA, Sweden and Australia in Group D.

Super Falcons rout Mali, qualify for All African Games.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria thrashed Mali 8-0 (9-1 on aggregate) today in Abuja and picked up a ticket to the 2015 edition of the All African Games coming up in Brazzaville, Congo in September. 
Desire Oparanozie, Asisat Oshoala and Francesca Ordega scored a brace each while Evelyn Nwabuoku and Esther Sunday netted one goal each.

Super Falcons get $18,000 each, demand landed property in Abuja.

A whooping sum of $18,000 were doled out to each of the triumphant Super Falcons players  for lifting the African Women’s champions (AWC) cup for the seventh time.
“For the group stage matches, the girls got $3000 each. They got $4000 for winning the semifinals and $5000 for lifting the cup. So all together they got $18,000 bonus outside their camp allowances.” NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu disclosed.

Ahead of their grand reception in Abuja, two of the Super Falcons players stated that they”ll prefer landed property in Abuja to any other form of reward from President Goodluck Jonathan.
Desire Oparanozie said, ” We’ll appreciate the president’s kind-heartedness more if he considers us for house or flat ownership as part of his rewards or packages for our victory at the just concluded AWC in Namibia.
“Any other thing like cash, national honours, among other things will be greatly appreciated but a house reward in the nation’s capital will be key and will truly make us national heroines.
“I’m sure our choice won’t be seen as being on the high side as the president has graciously rewarded our men’s counterparts with even more for a feat almost same as ours.”
Stella Mbachu also added, ‎”We’ll prefer something reasonable not scholarships as 85% of the players are already graduates.
“We want houses or flats as rewards for winning the African Women Championship for a record seventh times.
“I don’t think our humble request will amount to asking for too much though we won’t mind any way the nation wants to appreciate us for the honour we brought to Nigerians.
“We’re already boldened to even bring more and bigger laurels to the country by the sheer reception accorded to us by Nigerians since our arrival from Namibia.”

"I am inconsolable, I am a mother shattered". Popular sports correspondent, Aisha Falode pens emotional tribute to late son.

The remains of Oloruntoba Falode, the 19-year old son of top sports analyst and National Women’s Team (Super Falcons of Nigeria) coordinator, Aisha Falode who died on Saturday, 15 February 2014 after been reportedly pushed off a 17 storey building by an Arab man, has been committed to mother earth. The funeral service was held at the Trinity House, Victoria Island, and internment at Ikoyi Vaults and Gardens, Lagos.
Until his shocking death, Toba was a student in a Dubai-based institution and a rapper. His grieving mother has however written an emotional tribute to the late boy. May God continue to comfort the ones he left behind and may his soul find repose. Amen!

YOU ARE ME, I AM YOU.
I held you in my arms and my heart burst into a million pieces of joy. It was an indescribable moment. You were adorable as I touched every bit of you. Giddy with joy, I counted your toes, your fingers, tiny and wriggly; a tough bundle of joy. Your innocent gaze upon my face, those two adorable eyes, wide and searching as only a child’s would. All the gems in Arabia would fade into insignificance at the emergence of your presence. My son had come into the world, whole and complete you were. I had looked forward to having my own son. I carried you with pride and honour in my womb for 9 good months. Knowing that you will eventually be born made the discomforts of 9 months seem like chewing a candy bar. Here at last you were.

As you grew up into a most interesting young star, you were my joy. In all of my trying moments, knowing that you trusted me and believed in me spurred me through even the roughest terrain. Your childhood was joyful. Your sister and you were my life. You still are my life. Nothing can erase your memory, not a thousand winds or a million rainfalls can replace those memories, not even a fearsome volcano can wipe you from me. You are me, I am you.

I am devastated, I am pained, I am inconsolable, I am a mother shattered. Who can console me but God? He knows best and did they not say those HE loves HE calls home early?
My Son, the curtain fell too early for you, for us. I am in the audience; I cannot jump on the stage where you are. Even if I could, the curtain is drawn already. I cannot reach you. I am tempted to say, why me, but why not me? God loves us. HE took you my bundle of joy, even now I lean on HIM. I can see you, stretching out those strong arms, I see you trying to console me, I see you saying:

“Mum, it was meant to be, it is not your fault”, I see you. I see you everywhere.
Together, we walked for 19yrs, you brought me joy. You excelled in your academics, you made me a proud mother as you grew into a handsome, responsible, caring, humane, disciplined man. I will forever remember you my son. Those fun times, the times you held me when I was down, like the man of the house, which you became so early in life…I am consoled because I know for sure that you are in the bosom of the LORD.

I know for sure that we will meet again. You have not died, you are only asleep. This thought will keep me going until I behold your delightful presence again. I know you are here for I am you and you are me.
