SYNOPSIS
It’s September 1960, and with Nigeria on the verge of independence from British colonial rule, a northern Nigerian Police Detective, DAN WAZIRI, is urgently dispatched by the Colonial Government to the trading post town of Akote in the Western Region of Nigeria to solve a series of female murders that have struck horror in the hearts and minds of the local community.

On getting to Akote, more murders are committed, and with local tension high and volatile, Waziri has a race on his hands to solve the case before even more local women are killed.
Set against the backdrop of the national celebratory mood of the impending independence, Waziri is pulled into a game of cat and mouse as he and the killer try to outwit each other… leading to the climatic end in which the life of a popular local female teacher and village belle, Tawa, is held in the balance. Waziri has to race against the clock to capture the killer, save Tawa and solve the crime before the British flag is lowered and the Nigerian flag raised on Independence Day… October 1.

PHOTOS: KUNLE AFOLAYAN, DEOLA SAGOE, SADIQ BABA, ADERUPOKO ON THE SET OF OCTOBER 1

As you all know, October 1 is seasoned actor Kunle Afolayan's new project. The award-winning filmmaker during an interview with us revealed that his next movie will be the biggest. Well, going by the few pictures I've set my eyes on, this is certainly going to be another master-piece.

Featured in the film are some known and unknown actors. Deola Sagoe, a foremost fashion designer who made her acting debut in the new flick will be playing the role of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Sadiq Daba a veteran broadcaster and producer, is no stranger to the motion pictures industry.

These are some of the behind the scene pictures featuring Deola Sagoe, Kunle Afolayan, Sadiq Baba and Aderupoko. I learnt Kunle Afolayan has tribal marks on his cheeks. Interesting!!!

(INTERVIEW) MY NEXT FILM WILL BE THE BIGGEST-KUNLE AFOLAYAN

Regarded as an established actor, filmmaker/producer, Kunle Afolayan shot into public view with his not-so dimunitive role (Aresejabata) in the 1999 Mainframe box office, Saworoide’, after then, many felt he had receded from the public view. Not until few years ago, when he earned our trust with Irapada and then award-winning films, Figurine and Phone swap. Produced from his Golden Effects stables, his movies are not only poles different from the wishy-washy ones which flood the market but they speak lots of volumes in terms of originality, storyline, quality and many more.
There is no gainsay that his recent film, Phone Swap is a Nollywood production with a class, infact the buzz surrounding it is still very intense.

The film had its premiere barely two months in Nigeria and Ghana got four nominations at the recently concluded Africa Movies Academy Awards (AMAA) but claimed the Achievement in Production design prize. In this short interview, he speaks on the secret behind his first-class movies as well as other issues. Enjoy and share!
I ask, what differentiates Kunle Afolayan from other filmmakers?

In a very relaxed mood, the soft-spoken actor didn’t mince words, he exuded a lot of confidence all through.
“I think it is just my work that speaks for me and the fact that my mindset is different from a whole lot of people.” He began.

” I believe anything that is worth doing is worth doing well. I was able to witness the genesis of motion pictures in Nigeria and privileged to see the positivity in it when we started and what austerity and a whole lot of economic issues has done to the industry before it now translated to Nollywood. I felt that there’s a whole lot to be done to revive that vibrant industry, production value was more important than commercial, for me I’ve been able to blend the two together”.

What made Phone Swap a success?

I think it was God that made it so. Then i invested a lot of hardwork into it. The film wasn’t an hurried job, i really took our time. Then. i also had a wonderful cast, working with them was quite easy and enjoyable. Wale Ojo actually got into the cast like 4 Days to the shoot unlike Nse who got the script like a year before the shoot.

Briefly tell us about your company, ‘Golden Effects’.

Basically what we do is audio visuals. We shoot films, commercials and documentaries. We rent out equipments, we do training, act as liaisons for people who come to shoot films in Nigeria. We have different departments, post production, accounts and many more.

How do you monetize your creative content?

One of the channels of distribution available in this country is the theatrical, that is the cinema but we are trying to explore other forms like online streaming. We also extend it to training for other corporate organizations, we hope to sell TV rights much later, a film like Irapada is still making some money through TV rights. I want to believe that the scope is getting bigger.
Your father, ‘Ade Love’ w as a renowned entertainer, do you feel his impacts are really working out for you?

I will say Yes to an extent but the man was long dead before i started learning one or few things not as a filmmaker but rather in the area of film business. I never learnt anything from him creativity wise but i was able to see how they run production companies especially film exhibition and stuffs but most times it opens doors, it is now left for you to utilize that opportunity. For me I’ve been able to build my own image to the extent that it now rubs on easily. If you surf through the internet, most of the things that are being said about him (my Father) are being linked to me or some of my brothers, unfortunately we dont have archives in Nigeria, there are not a lot of things about him online, so children born 20 years time won’t even know anything about him until they search online.

We’ve seen Irapada, Figurine and Phone Swap, what’s next?

The next one is in progress, infact, i started working on it before Phone Swap. It’s in that genre of Figurine. I want to believe it is going to be the biggest.

How do you keep in shape and what are your regular exercises like?

I walk in the morning for one and a half hours, i used to play basketbal every Sunday but I’ve been so busy with work so I’ve not done that in a while now. At least i take a walk around my neighbourhood like three times a week.

What are your challenges, either as a family man or an enterpreneur?

The challenges are enormous, even our day to day activities. As a young enterpreneur, when you’re trying to manage creativity and business, for you to step up your game, you must really be very smart. For me i plan, most times when you employ people to do stuffs for you, they don’t do it to my satisfaction. That alone is challenging. Also, if you’re thinking about a project, there’s no sure avenue to raise money in this country. You have to think and work out how you raise money, that too is a very distracting and exhausting experience.
This environment does not help or encourage filmmakers. There’s usually no light, everything has has to be powered by generators, when you want to push, the light of these obstacles weigh me down, you might not really be at your best. We have been surviving it and our best is yet to come.

CELEBRITY LIST: LIKE FATHER LIKE SON

This week I’ll be talking on ‘Like father like son’ and this dwells on veteran celebrities who have made their mark in their chosen fields of endeavour and whose children are now toeing their paths.
While some are deceased others are still active and at times paired with their children in movies. Here’s my 7 list and as usual in alphabetic order.

1) Adebayo Salami (Oga Bello)/ Femi Adebayo

59 year-old Adebayo Salami is one of the most successful and most celebrated veteran actors in the Nigerian film industry. He’s starred in over 200 movies and garnered a lot of accolades.
His son Femi Adebayo who dumped his wig and gown for acting about 8 years ago is also doing incredibly well in the yoruba movie scene.

2) Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade Love)/Kunle, Aremu&Gabriel Afolayan

Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade Love) needs no introduction. Though now deceased, but in his lifetime the foremost filmmaker raised a lot of bars. Asides acting, his vocal dexterity was also a plus, infact he also produced soundtracks of movies.
Needless to say his sons Kunle, Aremu&Gabriel who are seasoned and award-winning thespians are still hoisting their father’s colourful flag. And there’s this touch of style and excellence in what they do.

3) Arthur Modupe Alade/ Dare Art Alade

I’m sorry I have no picture for Dare’s father but during his realm, he was versatile and talented; he could sing different parts of music, crack ribs and his Art Alade show was always a delight to watch. His son Dare got his talent from his father. The Project Fame West Africa finalist is one of the best R’n’b singers the country has ever produced.

4) Fela Anikulapo/Femi&Seun Anikulapo

Who doesn’t know Fela? The saxophone-wielding, musician and composer whose impact is still felt till date. Infact a considerable number of contemporary musicians draw so much inspiration from him.
But we take consolation in the fact that Femi and Seun, the most popular of his numerous sons have stepped into his shoes and continued where he stopped.

5) Jide Kosoko/Sola Kosoko-Abinna

Trained actor, Jide Kosoko who has been acting for over 15 years hasn’t in the least bit waned in influence. The 58 year-old theatre practitioner’s pretty daughter Sola Kosoko who got married few months ago is also a well-known face in the Nollywood industry.

6) Sunday Omobolanle (Aluwe)/ Olasunkanmi Omobolanle

Fondly called Pappy Luwe, when it comes to comic roles, Sunday Omobolanle isn’t a weakling. The Oyo-state indigene’s acting career spans decades.
His light-skinned son, Olasunkanmi who tied the knots last year has also been acting for the past 7 years and not doing bad for himself too.

7) Pete Edochie/ Yul Edochie
Heavily-bearded veteran, Pete Edochie has certainly paid his dues as long as Nollywood is concerned. Whether he is playing the role of a stern-faced man who would poison his sibling the nextminute over plots of land or a caring father (which is rare), the Igbo actor has been a blessing.
Unlike his father who fits into ‘wicked’ roles easily, handsome Yul maintains his cool, is soft-spoken and a gentle lover (in movies).

With this I draw the curtains..Till I come your way nextweek…Bye.Lol! (Don’t mind me)

TALENTED ACTOR, AREMU AFOLAYAN TOPS THE SCORE

With excellent pedigree in acting/ filmmaking, the versatile Afolayan brothers are massively dominating the Nigerian entertainment scene.
Sons of Legendary Filmmaker Ade Afolayan known as Ade Love, through impeccable and suspence-filled storylines, great acting skills, they do not only stand out but also hoist the country’s flag locally and internationally.
About a month ago, Gabriel Afolayan showed the music part of him when he released a classic single titled Kokoro Ife, just last Saturday Kunle Afolayan, bonafide actor and producer whose award-winning Figurine film is still gaining grounds attracted the creme de la creme to the premiere of his latest movie, ‘Phone Swap’.
However, come March 29th, Aremu an established star and an household name in the yoruba sector of Nollywood will also lead a couple of his fans, colleagues and friends to the premiere of his new masterpiece, ‘The Score’.
The Score revolves about two brothers whose characters are poles different. While one relishes in breaking the law, the other prefers upholding it.
The Score which parades accomplished thespians like Aremu Afolayan, Saheed Balogun ,Eniola Olaniyan, Olumide Bakare, Sunkanmi Omobolanle and others is produced by Aremu’s Broadway Films. The movie will be open at the cinema after its premiere.

KUNLE AFOLAYAN'S PHONE SWAP SET TO PREMIERE IN LAGOS, ABUJA AND GHANA

Bonafide actor and movie producer, Kunle Afoloyan will premiere his latest flick, ‘Phone Swap’ on March 17th, 2012 at the Eko Hotel&Suites.

The film, produced by Golden Effects pictures in association with Globacom telecommunications stars thorough-bred actress, Joke Silva, delectable Nse Ikpe-Etim, Wole Ojo, Chika Okpala, Lydia Forson, Ada Ameh.
Kunle Afolayan’s figurine was not only on-point, it swept awards and more significantly marked a big step up in his career. This new film, ‘Phone Swap’ will surely go to the Oscars, says Kunle.

SYNOPSIS

Akin and Mary meet for the first time at an airport where they accidentally bump into each other and mistakenly swap their identical phones.
This leads to a destination mixup after they receive one another’s text regarding a travel destination. Consequently, Akin ends up travelling to where Mary is supposed to go and vice versa. Neither knows about the swap until they have reached their opposite destinations and “the phone” stops ringing (In Mary’s case) and ‘Won’t stop ringing” (In Akin’s case).
As a result of the phone swap, they agree to carry out each other’s missions, armed with the information and data on each other’s phone. But it’s not as easy as they both think as new obstacles and complications rise at every turn as they both struggle to adapt to their alien environment and situation. Mary has to walk in Akins shoes and represent him in a company meeting while Akin has to represent Mary in her family meeting. This they do with hilarious results.
