Argentina to host FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023

Argentina, the most successful nation in the FIFA U-20 World Cup with six trophies will host the 2023 edition. 

This development is coming after Indonesia lost the hosting rights after the Bali governor refused to host Israel’s team. The draws will be held on Apr 21 in Zurich with the tournament scheduled from May 20 – June 11. 

“FIFA is delighted to announce that this year’s edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup will take place in Argentina, as the home of the world champions opens its doors to the tomorrow’s superstars of world football, I would like to thank the AFA and particularly its President Claudio Tapia, as well as the governmental authorities, for their commitment to hosting this magnificent event at such short notice. The U-20 World Cup plays a key role in FIFA’s efforts to promote youth football across the world. Since 1977, this tournament has featured some of the greatest players of the past decades, including Diego Armando Maradona, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Erling Haaland and many others. Argentina have won the tournament a record 6 times – 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2007.

Covid-19: FIFA to release $150 million in cash reserves.

World football governing body, FIFA has disclosed plans to release the 2019/ 2020 operation funds worth $150 million to its member associations as the first step to help mitigate the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges for the entire football community and, as the world governing body, it is FIFA’s duty to be there and support the ones that are facing acute needs.  This starts by providing immediate financial assistance to our member associations, many of which are experiencing severe financial distress.

“This is the first step of a far-reaching financial relief plan we are developing to respond to the emergency across the whole football community. Together with our stakeholders, we are we assessing the losses and we are working on the most appropriate and effective tools to implement the other stages of this relief plan.” FIFA stated in a statement.

Should clubs pay players during this covid-19 crisis? Here’s what FIFA thinks.

Football governing body, FIFA has approved the extension of player contracts until seasons are able to finish and the movement of transfer windows in response to the coronavirus pandemic. This decision was reached in a task force led by the chairman of the FIFA Football Stakeholders Committee, working on recommendations and guidelines to address issues caused by the coronavirus crisis. Clubs, players, leagues, national associations and confederations were all represented in the meeting.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly changed all the factual circumstances around football for this season, So, FIFA, together with the stakeholders, has come up with some practical ideas and proposals to tackle these new circumstances. Whilst this will not solve each and every problem, it should serve to bring a measure of stability and clarity to football for the foreseeable future. We hope that this collaborative effort, under the leadership of FIFA, can provide a positive example of how football can come together and show unity, solidarity and a spirit of compromise in order to face the challenging times ahead.” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

It was decided that contracts covering the 2019/20 season in England which are set to expire on June 30, 2020, will “be extended until such time that the season does actually end”. Also, transfer deals due to happen in the next campaign would be “delayed until the next season actually does start”

“Accordingly, FIFA will be flexible and will allow the relevant transfer windows to be moved so they fall between the end of the old season and the start of the new season. At the same time, FIFA will try to ensure, where possible, an overall level of coordination and will also bear in mind the need to protect the regularity, integrity and proper functioning of competitions, so that the sporting results of any competition are not unfairly disrupted.”

FIFA also  “strongly encourages clubs and players to work together to find agreements and solutions during the period when football is suspended”.

On the problem of player remuneration during this covid-19 crisis, FIFA maintained that, “looking at all aspects of each situation in an even-handed manner, including what Government measures are there to support clubs and players, whether pay should be deferred or reduced and what insurance coverage may exist. If parties cannot agree and, as a consequence, cases come to FIFA, the factors to be examined will include the following: whether there was a genuine attempt by the club to reach agreement with the players; what the economic situation of the club is; the proportionality of any adjustment to player contracts; the net income position of players after any contract adjustment; and whether players have been treated equally or not. In this way, FIFA hopes that it will be able to find solutions that are fair and balanced for both sides.”

While The men’s awards recognize achievements from 20th November 2016 to 2nd July 2017, the women’s awards take into account the period between 20th November 2016 and 6th August 2017. New FIFA role for Diego Maradona

Argentine football legend, Diego Maradona has landed an ambassadorial role with football’s world governing body, FIFA.
“Yes, it’s now official. I can finally fulfill one of the dreams of my life, to work for a clean and transparent FIFA, with people who love football.” Maradona said in a post on his official Facebook page
A FIFA spokesperson said: “We are looking for the best way to collaborate with Diego Armando Maradona, ensuring he has a major role in FIFA activities to promote the game across the globe, through his involvement in relevant development projects and the FIFA Legends’ programme.”

Nigeria climbs to 41st on latest Fifa Rankings

 
Nigeria has climbed to the 41st position on the latest  Fifa World Rankings released this week, despite not featuring in the just concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Gabon. Reigning African Champions, Cameroon moved to the 3rd position while Egypt and Senegal occupy the 1st and 2nd position on the log respectively.

Amaju Pinnick gets FIFA appointment

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have confirmed the appointment of their President, Amaju Pinnick  into the Federation of International Football Federation (FIFA) Organizing Committee for Competitions.
According to thenff.com, FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, who signed Pinnick’s letter of appointment dated 18th January 2017, wrote: “We are very pleased to inform you that you have been appointed member of the Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions. We wish you our sincere congratulations on this appointment.
“The FIFA administration is at your disposal through the following Administration Officer, who will be in contact with you regarding the upcoming meetings and any further aspects relating to your office as member of this committee: Colin Smith, Chief Competitions Officer.
“We wish you great success and enjoyment in this role at FIFA and look forward to welcoming you soon to Zurich.”

he world body had different committees for organization of its several competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Confederations Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, FIFA U20 World Cup, FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, FIFA U17 World Cup, FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. Pinnick was a member of the Organising Committee for the FIFA U20 World Cup.

However, at its 66th Congress in Mexico City on 12th – 13th May 2016, and in accordance with the revised FIFA Statutes that came into force on 27th April 2016, the model of the standing committees was reviewed, cutting the number from 26 to 9.

The new model has only the following committees: Governance, Finance, Development, Member Associations, Referees, Players’ Status, Football Stakeholders, Medical, Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions.

In line with the new FIFA reforms, each proposed member of any of the committees was made to go through a comprehensive integrity check conducted by several organisations of global relevance and stature.

As a member of the CAF Organising Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations, Pinnick is presently at the 31st Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, and will be match commissioner for Saturday’s clash between Mali and Ghana.
Meanwhile Pinnick is a candidate for election into the Executive Committee of CAF.
The CAF elections will take place at the 39th Ordinary General Assembly of the organization in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 16th March.

FIFA confirm a 48-team World Cup from 2026

The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) Council have unanimously voted to expand the World Cup to 48 teams from 2026. The confirmation was made on FIFA media twitter handle on Tuesday.

“The FIFA Council unanimously decided on a 48-team #WorldCup as of 2026: 16 groups of 3 teams,” The governing body announced on it’s official Twitter page.

The decision to increase the number of qualified teams for the 2026 World Cup was reached at the Council meeting held in Zurich. There will be 16 groups which will be made up of three teams each.

 Prior to this new development, 32 teams with four teams in each groups feature at the World Cup.
