Covid-19: The world’s largest critical care unit unveiled in London.

Completed in 10 days!

As part of its fight against the corona virus crisis, the U.K.today opened the world’s largest critical care unit. The Prince of Wales joined the opening ceremony of the NHS Nightingale Hospital, which was set up in London’s massive ExCel center in Docklands.

HRH princes of Wales, Prince Charles, who is in self-isolation for a week after testing positive to the virus joined the ceremony via video link from Birkhall, Scotland and said the hospital was an intensely practical message of hope at this time of national suffering.”

Headded, “let us pray, ladies and gentlemen, that it will be required for as short a time, and for as few people as possible, I need hardly say that the name of this hospital could not have been more aptly chosen. Florence Nightingale, the Lady with the Lamp, brought hope and healing to thousands in their darkest hour. In this dark time, this place will be a shining light. It is symbolic of the selfless care and devoted service taking place in innumerable settings, with countless individuals, throughout the United Kingdom.”

The hospital boasts of 500 intensive care beds which will be extended with another 3,500 beds as the need for intensive care for COVID-19 cases arises. Military personnel helped to build the 80 wards in the new hospital.

“Bayern defender Jerome Boateng left Munich yesterday without permission from the club, Boateng has transgressed the guidelines issued by the club by being too far away from his home. These guidelines govern the behaviour of the FC Bayern players in the current situation in line with government directives on restrictions on movement and the recommendations of the health authorities.” The club said.

“I know it was certainly a mistake not to inform the club of my journey, but at the time, I was only thinking about my son. He was not in good health. If a son calls his father, then of course I will go, whatever the time of day.” Boateng defended himself.

Was the punishment fair or unfair?

WHO concerned as COVID-19 cases accelerate in Africa

With more than 6000 COVID-19 cases reported in Africa, the virus is threatening fragile health systems on the continent. Infections are increasingly spreading not only between African countries but within different localities in the hardest-hit countries.

For instance, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where COVID-19 cases were at first confined to Kinshasa, now a handful of cases have been reported in the easternmost regions of the country that were until recently in the grip of an Ebola outbreak. In South Africa, all provinces have now reported cases. The outbreaks in Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Senegal are also widespread.

“It’s also crucial that the international community promptly provide the considerable funding needed to maintain and scale up assistance programmes.”

As well as ensuring basic needs are met, WHO is pursuing innovative solutions to the region’s pressing public health problems. On 1 April 2020, WHO hosted an online training session on the clinical management of COVID-19 cases. Nearly 500 attendees from across Africa logged in to learn about issues including case characterization and triage, treating severely ill cases, infection prevention and control, and how to quarantine and manage cases in the community. WHO also hosted a three-day ‘hackathon’, bringing together Africa’s brightest minds to find solutions to some of the problems COVID-19 has presented.

“Case numbers are increasing exponentially in the African region,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa “It took 16 days from the first confirmed case in the Region to reach 100 cases. It took a further 10 days to reach the first thousand. Three days after this, there were 2000 cases, and two days later we were at 3000.”

To contain COVID-19, many countries in Africa are implementing measures, which restrict gatherings and the movement of people. Nationwide lockdowns are in effect in Kenya, Uganda, the Republic of the Congo and elsewhere. However, governments must use these measures in a considered, evidence-based manner, and make sure that people can continue to access basic necessities.

As many people in the region live in crowded conditions or work in the informal sector and need to earn money daily to survive, it is important that countries make provisions to ensure that people can still access essential services. WHO is working closely with national governments and United Nations partners including the World Food Programme (WFP) to plan for these needs.

Dr Moeti and Ms Lola Castro, the WFP Regional Director for Southern Africa, addressed the restrictive measures during a virtual media briefing held today by the WHO Regional Office for Africa with the support of the World Economic Forum.

“For socially restrictive measures to be effective, they must be accompanied by strong, sustained and targeted public health measures that locate, isolate, test and treat COVID-19 cases,” Dr Moeti pointed out.

“It’s vital that ports continue to operate to receive food and other essential humanitarian cargo; that borders and roads stay open so it can be moved where it is most needed; and that distributions to vulnerable people are conducted safely,” said Ms Castro.

NCDC distributes supplies from Jack Ma foundation.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), today confirmed the distribution of the supplies made by, Jack Ma Foundation, a charitable organization established in 2014 by Jack Ma, Founder of Alibaba Group.
Recall that a week ago, the Chinese billionaire supported the areas of the world most affected by the Covid-19 crisis, sourcing and delivering various types of medical supplies to Asia, United States, Africa, Italy, Belgium, France, Slovenia, Spain and Latin America.
The supplies arrived aboard an Ethiopian Airlines cargo plane at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) at 3:20 p.m on March 25, 2020. They include 20,000 laboratory diagnostic test kits, 100,000 medical masks, and 1,000 protective suits and face shields.

“We’re grateful for the support from @foundation_ma  in strengthening Nigeria’s response to #COVID19 The supplies received have been distributed to states accordingly, with priority given to states with the highest number of cases at the time of distribution.” The NCDC tweeted.

Corona Virus pandemic

Footballing world is joining the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Footballers and teams around the world are contributing to hospitals, health and stadium workers and others affected by COVID-19 as the pandemic spreads rapidly across the world, affecting more than 170 countries. In the wake of matches being postponed due to COVID-19, let’s take a look at the players, clubs who are doing their bits to help humanity.

Asides donating 1m Euros ($1.1 million) each to the cause, world best footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and their teams have also reportedly decided to take pay cuts to help non-sporting staff who may face financial distress in this difficult period.

Image

While Messi donated to Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, which is both treating the victims of the pandemic and researching the virus, Portugal and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes jointly donated life-saving equipment to Portuguese hospitals in Lisbon and Porto.

“For our part, the time has come to announce that, as well as the reduction of 70 per cent of our salary during the State of Alarm, we will also make contributions so the club’s employees can collect 100 per cent of their salary while this situation lasts. We want to clarify that our desire has always been to apply a drop in salary because we fully understand that this is an exceptional situation and we are the first ones who have ALWAYS helped the club when asked. Many times we have even done it on our own initiative when we thought it necessary or important. Therefore, it never ceases to amaze us that from within the club there were those who tried to put us under the magnifying glass and tried to add pressure to do something that we always knew we would do.” Messi wrote on his page.

Ronaldo’s €1 million will fund two intensive care units that can cater for up to 20 patients at one time at the Lisbon’s Hospital de Santa Maria. Those two units will reportedly be named after Ronaldo and Mendes. The Santo Antonio hospital in Porto will have one ward equipped with 15 intensive care beds, fully equipped with fans, monitors and other equipment.

“They were absolutely unselfish and supportive. They wanted to improve the conditions of their compatriots. Therefore, we reinforced the critical care area, which is the one where the biggest fight will be fought. We want to thank Ronaldo and Mendes for the initiative, which is so useful at the time the country needs everyone so much,” Paulo Barbosa, president of Santo Antonio’s administrative council and Santa Maria President Daniel Ferro said in separate statements.

Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos and his wife Pilar Rubio announced their decision to donate 264,571 masks, 1,000 items of protective equipment and 15,000 tests to help in the fight against corona virus in Spain. The donation will be made through international NGO.

Image

“We have already collaborated with @unicef_es [UNICEF Spain]. Immediate and necessary help! The health material, essential for health professionals, will arrive in Spain on Friday,” he added.

Swedish professional footballer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is also helping humanity. He has donated 100,000 euros to support Humanitas Hospitals during the coronavirus outbreak in Italy. The AC Milan striker also set up an online fundraiser that has raised an additional 50,000 Euros in one day. Alessio Romagnoli and Rafael Leao responded to the call to action.

Juventus players and coaching staff have agreed to take pay cuts for the next four months with the agreement said to be worth about £80.7million (€90m) of the club’s wage bill. Ronaldo’s annual salary at Juventus is about £28million, approximately £280,000 every week. The wage cut will now see the Portuguese cut his wages to by £3.4m (€3.8m).

A statement from Juventus read, “Juventus Football Club announces that due to the current global health emergency is preventing the performance of the sporting activity, it has reached an understanding with the players and the coach of the First Team regarding their compensation for the residual portion of the current sport season.”

Barcelona donated 30,000 masks to the Catalonia government and also released their own statement on Monday, stating that members of “all professional sports teams and most of the basketball team” had agreed to reduce their salaries.

“In the case of the football first team the reduction will be more than 70 per cent as agreed with the club. This additional contribution by the team, plus the contribution from the club itself, will guarantee 100 per cent of the salaries of all non-sporting staff, who will be subjected to temporary redundancy this week.”  The statement added.

Espanyol, announced that the pay cut would apply to sporting staff only: from the men’s and women’s first teams to the B team and the two under-19 sides. In a statement released by Espanyol, the club said the players have been advised and they “understand and respect” the measure, conscious of “how delicate the situation is”. They are prepared, the club said, “to each an amicable agreement with the club without having to take more drastic measures”.

Atlético Madrid have become the third La Liga club to announce a temporary redundancy scheme – to reduce club costs. Club CEO Gil Marin stated the decision was brought about to “guarantee the club’s survival.” 500 employees at the Madrid-based club will be affected by the decision with players, staff and club employees expected to see a 70% reduction in salaries.

Barcelona and Espanyol have announced their willingness to put their facilities at the disposition of the health authorities as the crisis worsens.

Other clubs are expected to follow suit in the coming days.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola donated 1m Euros (£920,000) to fight the outbreak in Spain. It will go to a campaign being promoted by the Medical College of Barcelona and the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation. Funds will be used to purchase medical equipment and protective materials for the hospital staff involved in treating covid-19 patients.

Bayern Munich and Poland international striker Robert Lewandowski also donated 1m Euros to the fight against corona virus. Bayern Munich players have also agreed a 20% salary cut to pay staff.

“We are all aware of the difficulties of the situation around us. Today, we are all playing in one team. Let’s be strong in this fight. If we can help someone, let’s do it.
We have decided to donate EUR 1 million to contribute toward the fight against corona virus. This situation affects each of us, so we are asking you again: Follow the instructions, listen to those who know best. Be responsible. We believe that we will return to our normal life soon. We are in this together.”
He wrote on his instagram page.

His teammates, Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich donated a combined 1m Euros to their We kick Corona fund.  The fund has raised 2.5m Euros so far.

Senegalese winger, Sadio Mane has donated 30 million CFA francs (USD 50,000) to his country’s National Medical Commission to fight the pandemic. Ivory Coast legend, Didier Drogba gave masks to the cathedral of Abidjan, with the message: “My sisters, my brothers, I ask you to take the matter very seriously… we tend to be too light about our reactions to the situation.”

Barcelona legend and head coach of Al-Sadd in Qatar, Xavi Hernandez has donated €1 million to Hospital Clinic in Spain  and alsp appealed for more resources to aid its response to the crisis. The 40 year-old made the donation with his partner, journalist Nuria Cunillera, and said in a social media video adding that the “purchasing sanitary equipment for professionals and patients.”

The Alcantara brothers, Thiago and Rafinha were not left out. They also pooled resources and donated money to Hospital Clinic in Barcelona for the fight against coronavirus.

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld donated tablets to isolated people in hospitals and nursing homes.

“We are already getting messages from people who can now speak to their families and it has been a real help, I didn’t do it for a reaction, just to help but it has been so positive. “In the UK we are a little bit behind Europe, I was getting news from across Europe so I was in a corona virus state of mind. I called my dad and said we have to do something; we have to try to help. We were brainstorming, my dad contacted some hospitals and they said we need some tablets for people who are isolated, especially older people who don’t have a phone. It keeps a visual connection with loved ones, which was impossible otherwise. It makes me very happy and makes me sad that I can’t help everyone but I am trying the best I can. If it can bring just a little bit of joy to their lives it is great.”

Bournemouth manager, Eddie Howe has become the first Premier League boss to take a voluntary pay cut to help the club cope with the financial hit of coronavirus.

As the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic continues to gather pace, there are far more questions than answers regarding its effects. One thing is for certain, however; the wellbeing of our employees, supporters, local communities and everyone around the world is of far greater significance than football matches.“There is no script for moments like this. No tactics and no set plays to find a winning formula. But as a board we are continually looking at ways to ensure the future of the club and our employees is protected when the season returns.” A statement from the board of directors read.

Arsenal has pledged a £100,000 donation to help fight the outbreak. Recall that their manager, Mikel Arteta, tested positive to the virus.

A club statement read: “Arsenal Football Club has never shied away from responding to the needs of its community. In these uncertain times we are taking a series of steps to ensure our local and global communities receive our full support.

“The Arsenal Foundation will donate £100,000 to local charities and organisations that are supporting those most in need during this COVID-19 crisis. “We are in constant dialogue with Islington Council and our partners in the NHS to ensure this response is aligned with their priorities and supports those most vulnerable. “A further £50,000 already donated to local community initiatives by The Arsenal Foundation, in partnership with Islington Giving, will also be re-directed to Islington Giving’s Crisis Fund as part of this COVID-19 community response. From Tuesday, March 24, we will make all Arsenal in the Community cars available to transport front line NHS mental health workers.

North Liverpool Foodbank faced a serious shortfall following the suspension of the Premier League due to coronavirus. About 25 per cent of donations come from matchday collections, but with no fixtures till April there can be no collections, Liverpool however came to their rescue to ensure the foodbank isn’t depleted.

Their first-team squad and LFC Foundation jointly pledged a £10,000 donation for every remaining home game the Reds are due to play this season, with four matches resulting in a total £40,000 donation. The club are also making a cash donation to North Liverpool Foodbank, while excess food at Anfield and Liverpool’s Melwood training ground will be donated, too.

A statement from the Premier League club read: “Liverpool’s first-team squad, LFC Foundation, Red Neighbours and club staff will come together to back Fans Supporting Foodbanks during the suspension of Premier League football. The collective show of solidarity aims to help the initiative at an uncertain time, following the postponement of Monday’s Merseyside derby and the subsequent round of fixtures due to the coronavirus outbreak.”

LFC Foundation director Matt Parish said: “The postponement of Premier League matches, particularly the Merseyside derby, means a potential shortfall in donations to the North Liverpool Foodbank – and as a club it is imperative we support its crucial work in the local community even further at this difficult time.

“We hope the collective backing of the club’s first-team players, LFC Foundation and Red Neighbours programmes, and staff, can help to alleviate concerns around the absence of the usual matchday collections.

“Our fans have consistently gone above and beyond in their backing for Fans Supporting Foodbanks in recent years and we would encourage anyone who is able to make a donation at any of our collection points or via the online fundraiser.”

Chelsea will also cover costs for NHS staff working in the region to stay at the Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge.

A club statement read: “Chelsea Football Club is joining the medical response to the coronavirus outbreak in London with the news the National Health Service (NHS) has accepted the Club’s offer to make the Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge available for NHS staff.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Manchester City have donated a combined £100,000 to local food banks in a bid to support them through the corona virus crisis. They donated to the Trussell Trust, an organisation which supports over 1,200 food banks across the country, including 19 in the Great Manchester vicinity.

“We are proud of the role our supporters play in helping local food banks and recognise the increased strain likely to be placed on these charities by the impact of coronavirus. At a time of challenge for our community, we are pleased to come together with our fans to help vulnerable members of society in a City United.” the Premier League heavyweights said in a joint statement.

Spanish giants, Real Madrid also made what was described a “significant donation” to the Comunidad de Madrid in order to buy extra medical supplies to stop the coronavirus outbreak in the region. Asides that, Real Madrid’s 78,000-capacity Santiago Bernabéu will be turned into a storage and distribution centre for medical materials donated to the health authorities. Madrid will use their charitable foundation to receive financial donations and have set up a point of contact to collect and receive donations of materials which will then be stored at the stadium.

Valencia’s owner, Peter Lim, has bought 50,000 FFP2 face masks and 300 thermometers that will be given to the Valencia regional government in the name of the club.

An Emir, The Egungun and a Cultural Express ~ By: Wole Temidire Aguda

“Egungun be careful, na express you de go” is perhaps the most confounding entertainment rebound of our generation in Nigeria today. In almost magical fashion, a subtle but firm warning against indiscretion in conduct occasioned by wealth, ability, privilege or opportunity has sipped into our sociosphere and raving. Fuji Musician, Abass Akande, had loosely but energetically deployed creative imagery of an Egungun (an elaborately dressed masquerade in this case) whose stock in trade is amusement from a cheering crowd and perhaps tokens earned from performances to depict men and women in places of social recognition and attention.

Extendable to any phenomenon that is cynosure of all eyes, caution and moderation is preached by this popular musician of Yoruba extraction in that musical stretch. Obesere as the musician is popularly called, laced warning for the ‘Egungun’ with proverbial insight of the consequences of discarding restraint and caution during performances. 20 years after, and basking in the emerging euphoria of this rather strange comeback, I am quite certain that Obsesere held little or no premonition of the relevance of his musical satire in the class duel that would envelope power junctions in Kano State as observable over the last 3 years.

Corona Virus: Buhari addresses the nation.

President of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has addressed the nation on the COVID- 19 pandemic. Read his address below:

Fellow Nigerians, from the first signs that Coronavirus, or COVID-19 was turning into an epidemic and was officially declared a world-wide emergency, the Federal Government started planning preventive, containment and curative measures in the event the disease hits Nigeria. The whole instruments of government are now mobilized to confront what has now become both a health emergency and an economic crisis.

Nigeria, unfortunately, confirmed its first case on 27th February 2020. Since then, we have seen the number of confirmed cases rise slowly. By the morning of March 29th, 2020, the total confirmed cases within Nigeria had risen to ninety-seven. Regrettably, we also had our first fatality, a former employee of PPMC, who died on 23rd March 2020. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this very difficult time. We also pray for quick recovery for those infected and undergoing treatment. As of today, COVID-19 has no cure. Scientists around the world are working very hard to develop a vaccine. We are in touch with these institutions as they work towards a solution that will be certified by international and local medical authorities within the shortest possible time.

For now, the best and most efficient way to avoid getting infected is through regular hygienic and sanitary practices as well as social distancing. As individuals, we remain the greatest weapon to fight this pandemic. By washing our hands regularly with clean water and soap, disinfecting frequently used surfaces and areas, coughing into a tissue or elbow and strictly adhering to infection prevention control measures in health facilities, we can contain this virus. Since the outbreak was reported in China, our Government has been monitoring the situation closely and studying the various responses adopted by other countries.

Indeed, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) was one of ten global health leaders invited by the World Health Organisation to visit China and understudy their response approach. I am personally very proud of Dr Ihekweazu for doing this on behalf of all Nigerians.  Since his return, the NCDC has been implementing numerous strategies and programs in Nigeria to ensure that the adverse impact of this virus on our country is minimized. We ask all Nigerians to support the work the Federal Ministry of Health and NCDC are doing, led by the Presidential Task Force.

Although we have adopted strategies used globally, our implementation programs have been tailored to reflect our local realities.  In Nigeria, we are taking a two step approach. First, to protect the lives of our fellow Nigerians and residents living here and second, to preserve the livelihoods of workers and business owners to ensure their families get through this very difficult time in dignity and with hope and peace of mind.

To date, we have introduced healthcare measures, border security, fiscal and monetary policies in our response. We shall continue to do so as the situation unfolds. Some of these measures will surely cause major inconveniences to many citizens. But these are sacrifices we should all be willing and ready to make for the greater good of our country. In Nigeria’s fight against COVID-19, there is no such thing as an overreaction or an under reaction. It is all about the right reaction by the right agencies and trained experts.

Accordingly, as a Government, we will continue to rely on guidance of our medical professionals and experts at the Ministry of Health, NCDC and other relevant agencies through this difficult time. I therefore urge all citizens to adhere to their guidelines as they are released from time to time. As we are all aware, Lagos and Abuja have the majority of confirmed cases in Nigeria. Our focus therefore remains to urgently and drastically contain these cases, and to support other states and regions in the best way we can.

This is why we provided an initial intervention of fifteen billion Naira (N15b) to support the national response as we fight to contain and control the spread. We also created a Presidential Task Force (PTF) to develop a workable National Response Strategy that is being reviewed on a daily basis as the requirements change. This strategy takes international best practices but adopts them to suit our unique local circumstances.

Our goal is to ensure all States have the right support and manpower to respond immediately. So far, in Lagos and Abuja, we have recruited hundreds of ad-hoc staff to man our call centers and support our tracing and testing efforts. I also requested, through the Nigeria Governors Forum, for all State Governments to nominate Doctors and Nurses who will be trained by the NCDC and Lagos State Government on tactical and operational response to the virus in case it spreads to other states.

This training will also include medical representatives from our armed forces, paramilitary and security and intelligence agencies. As a nation, our response must be guided, systematic and professional. There is a need for consistency across the nation. All inconsistencies in policy guidelines between Federal and State agencies will be eliminated. As I mentioned earlier, as at this morning we had ninety-seven confirmed cases. Majority of these are in Lagos and Abuja. All the confirmed cases are getting the necessary medical care.

Our agencies are currently working hard to identify cases and people these patients have been in contact with. The few confirmed cases outside Lagos and Abuja are linked to persons who have travelled from these centres. We are therefore working to ensure such inter state and intercity movements are restricted to prevent further spread.

Based on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Health and the NCDC, I am directing the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday, 30th March 2020. This restriction will also apply to Ogun State due to its close proximity to Lagos and the high traffic between the two States. All citizens in these areas are to stay in their homes. Travel to or from other states should be postponed. All businesses and offices within these locations should be fully closed during this period.

The Governors of Lagos and Ogun States as well as the Minister of the FCT have been notified. Furthermore, heads of security and intelligence agencies have also been briefed. We will use this containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases. We will ensure the treatment of confirmed cases while restricting further spread to other States.

This order does not apply to hospitals and all related medical establishments as well as organizations in health care related manufacturing and distribution.

Furthermore, commercial establishments such as;

a. food processing, distribution and retail companies;

b. petroleum distribution and retail entities,

c. power generation, transmission and distribution companies; and

d. private security companies are also exempted.

. Although these establishments are exempted, access will be restricted and monitored. Workers in telecommunication companies, broadcasters, print and electronic media staff who can prove they are unable to work from home are also exempted.

All seaports in Lagos shall remain operational in accordance with the guidelines I issued earlier. Vehicles and drivers conveying essential cargoes from these Ports to other parts of the country will be screened thoroughly before departure by the Ports Health Authority. Furthermore, all vehicles conveying food and other essential humanitarian items into these locations from other parts of the country will also be screened thoroughly before they are allowed to enter these restricted areas.

Accordingly, the Hon. Minister of Health is hereby directed to redeploy all Port Health Authority employees previously stationed in the Lagos and Abuja Airports to key roads that serve as entry and exit points to these restricted zones. Movements of all passenger aircraft, both commercial and private jets, are hereby suspended. Special permits will be issued on a needs basis. We are fully aware that such measures will cause much hardship and inconvenience to many citizens. But this is a matter of life and death, if we look at the dreadful daily toll of deaths in Italy, France and Spain.

However, we must all see this as our national and patriotic duty to control and contain the spread of this virus. I will therefore ask all of us affected by this order to put aside our personal comfort to safeguard ourselves and fellow human beings. This common enemy can only be controlled if we all come together and obey scientific and medical advice. As we remain ready to enforce these measures, we should see this as our individual contribution in the war against COVID-19. Many other countries have taken far stricter measures in a bid to control the spread of the virus with positive results.

For residents of satellite and commuter towns and communities around Lagos and Abuja whose livelihoods will surely be affected by some of these restrictive measures, we shall deploy relief materials to ease their pains in the coming weeks. Furthermore, although schools are closed, I have instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to work with State Governments in developing a strategy on how to sustain the school feeding program during this period without compromising our social distancing policies. The Minister will be contacting the affected States and agree on detailed next steps.

Furthermore, I have directed that a three month repayment moratorium for all TraderMoni, MarketMoni and FarmerMoni loans be implemented with immediate effect.

I have also directed that a similar moratorium be given to all Federal Government funded loans issued by the Bank of Industry, Bank of Agriculture and the Nigeria Export Import Bank. For on-lending facilities using capital from international and multilateral development partners, I have directed our development financial institutions to engage these development partners and negotiate concessions to ease the pains of the borrowers.

For the most vulnerable in our society, I have directed that the conditional cash transfers for the next two months be paid immediately. Our Internally displaced persons will also receive two months of food rations in the coming weeks.

We also call on all Nigerians to take personal responsibility to support those who are vulnerable within their communities, helping them with whatever they may need. As we all pray for the best possible outcome, we shall continue planning for all eventualities.

This is why I directed that all Federal Government Stadia, Pilgrims camps and other facilities be converted to isolation centers and makeshift hospitals. My fellow Nigerians, as a Government, we will avail all necessary resources to support the response and recovery. We remain committed to do whatever it takes to confront COVID-19 in our country.

We are very grateful to see the emerging support of the private sector and individuals to the response as well as our development partners. At this point, I will ask that all contributions and donations be coordinated and centralized to ensure efficient and impactful spending. The Presidential Task Force remains the central coordinating body on the COVID-19 response.

I want to assure you all that Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies with a role to play in the outbreak response are working hard to bring this virus under control. Every nation in the world is challenged at this time. But we have seen countries where citizens have come together to reduce the spread of the virus. I will therefore implore you again to strictly comply with the guidelines issued and also do your bit to support Government and the most vulnerable in your communities.

I will take this opportunity to thank all our public health workforce, health care workers, port health authorities and other essential staff on the frontlines of the response for their dedication and commitment. You are true heroes. I thank you all for listening. May God continue to bless and protect us all.

President Muhammadu Buhari
