Mikel Obi still in awe of Rio Olympics achievement

Obi who captained Nigeria’s Dream Team to the just-concluded Rio Olympics games
is still in awe of the squad’s achievement. Nigeria’s football team claimed the
nation’s first medal since 2008 at the sporting event after defeating Honduras
in the third place match on Saturday. However, the excitement the victory has brought will not wear off quickly from the 29 year-old. 
“When I woke up in my hotel room on Sunday morning, I opened my eyes to
see my Olympic bronze medal lying there
beside me. It just hammered home to me what I had achieved with the rest of my
Nigeria team-mates the day before. We beat Honduras 3-2 to get the bronze
and secure Nigeria’s first Olympics medal in any sport since 2008. 
All of
us went into the game knowing this and it put extra pressure on the squad to
perform.
The
team actually played very well for the most part. We controlled the game, I
created three goals to put us 3-0 up and it was all very comfortable. But we
conceded two late on and all of a sudden it looked like everything was going
downhill. They made us sweat a bit and we were relieved to come out victorious.
I was
obviously very clear before travelling to Brazil that my target was the gold
medal.  But to get the bronze is still an amazing achievement.  There
was a celebration at the hotel afterwards, we were all jumping around. Everyone
was so excited. 
But we
managed to get everyone to sit down together and have a team meal. After
everything we have been through, it was great to have something to show for it
and we all thanked each other. I went
to sleep last night with my medal beside me; I couldn’t and didn’t want to let
it out of my sight.
It
really is a dream come true for me, for my family, my two little angels – my
twin baby girls – my wonderful girlfriend, who has supported me all the way.
I
might take the medal to the Chelsea training ground to show to the other
players – I hope I don’t make them jealous though! But
first off all I want to celebrate with my family, put it around my daughters’
neck, take pictures and make sure they get to see what daddy achieved.
This
experience has given me the hunger to do it again at the Olympics in Tokyo in
2020. I will be only 33 then and my game will still be at a high level.
I
enjoyed every minute of being in Brazil and I have been talking to the other
guys about playing in another Olympics. I’m already looking forward to it and
the countdown is on!
It’s
also provided me with a nice lift as I return to Chelsea. I will go back to see
the manager [Antonio Conte] and see what his plans are for me. I want
to get back into training and prove myself. I want to play and help the team to
win games.

I know
it will be difficult because I have missed most of pre-season and the coach has
a new way of playing. But it
is a positive thing for me that I have been playing well out here in Brazil and
I’m in good shape. 
I will
need a few days off first because this tournament has been so draining. I
arrive back in London on Wednesday morning and the game against Burnley on
Saturday will come too early to feature in.
The
plan is to have a little break, which is why the timing couldn’t be better as
the season stops for two weeks for international fixtures after the Burnley
game anyway. It
will give me plenty of time to enjoy my bronze medal and reflect on what has
been a magical few weeks in my football career.

Rio 2016: Nigeria win their first medal

Nigeria’s Dream Team won their first medal, a Bronze at the Rio Olympics after a 3-2 win over Honduras last night. Meanwhile, Japanese business mogul, Katsuya Takasu who pledged to give the squad a  $10,000 bonus for winning the bronze medal has fulfilled his promise.

He presented a $190k cheque to Mikel Obi and $200k cheque to Samson Siasia, a total of $390k.

Neymar scores fastest goal in Olympics history

Brazil’s Neymar today set record for the fastest goal in Olympics history. The Barcelona star netted the opening goal of Brazil’s semifinal against Honduras 15 seconds after kickoff. He intercepted a faulty pass from the Hondurans, sent it in, collided with the keeper, got injured and stretchered off  and then re-entered the game. He also scored in the last minutes of the match which ended 6-0.

RIO Olympics: NOC releases Zika virus prevention guidelines for Nigerians

Ahead of the Olympic Games which will hold from August 5 to 21 at the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The Nigeria Olympic Committee Medical and Scientific Commission have released guidelines on  Zika virus prevention for Nigerians who are attending the sporting event. Pregnant women have been advised not to travel to Brazil, while athletes, officials and other Nigerians in the country for the games should prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellent and protective clothing.
• After the Games, all travellers should practice safer sex, including the correct and consistent use of condoms, or abstain from sex for at least eight weeks after their return;
• Men who experience symptoms of Zika virus disease during or after their return, should adopt safer sex practices or abstain from sex for at least six months;
• Pregnant women whose sexual partners travelled to Brazil should practice safer sex practices or abstain from sex for the duration of their pregnancy. Couples or women planning a pregnancy should wait at least eight weeks after return from Brazil before trying to conceive; and 6 months if the male partner was symptomatic;
• All travellers should use personal protective measures such as insect repellent for at least three weeks after returning from the Games to avoid being bitten and potentially spreading the infection to other people through mosquito bites; and,
• Travellers should not donate blood for at least four weeks after departure from Brazil to reduce the potential risk of onwards transmission.

Nigerians should also “be up to date with all the common childhood vaccinations before visiting Brazil (you may even need a booster). This includes immunizations for Tetanus and Diphtheria, Whooping cough (Pertussis), Hepatitis B, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).
Brazil is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as endemic for Yellow Fever. A Yellow Fever vaccination is compulsory.” It added that the full two-dose Hepatitis A vaccine is strongly recommended when visiting Brazil and other precautions for hygiene and food safety should be taken.

RIO 2016 : Mikel Obi named captain of Team Nigeria

Obi has been named captain of Team Nigeria for the forthcoming 2016 Olympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro scheduled to hold from August 5 to 21. He will be assisted
by table tennis star, Funke Oshonaike.
The duo were chosen due to
‘their consistency, patriotism and dedication to national assignments.’
“Mikel
is a young, patriotic footballer of international status and we believe he will
be a role model to the upcoming athletes while Funke Oshonaike is experienced
and is one of the oldest athletes in the team. We believe that their combined
efforts will bring goodwill to Team Nigeria and project the county’s image
positively to the world.” The Sports ministry said in a statement.

We didn’t ask athletes to buy their tickets to Rio – Sports Minister

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung has debunked reports that the Ministry has asked foreign based athletes going to the Olympic Games in Rio to buy their own air tickets. 

In a statement released today, Dalung revealed that the Director, High Performance Angie Taylor has been saddled with the responsibility of arranging for the flights and movement of the foreign based athletes to and from Rio.

“We did not write any mail asking athletes to pay their way to Rio. As the overseers of sports in the country, it is our duty to take care of all our athletes. The letter did not come from us and we will investigate the writer of that letter. It does not represent our stand concerning the movement of athletes to Rio and the writer or anybody asking athletes to buy their tickets to Rio will be investigated. We ask Nigerians and athletes in particular to disregard the mail,” he said.

Nigeria U-23 team secures Rio 2016 Olympics ticket


Nigeria has booked a place at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games football tournament. Nigeria advanced to the final after beating host, Senegal 1-0 in the first semi-final. 
The squad will now battle Algeria who also qualified for the final, for the 2015 U-23 AFCON gong. 
The match will be played on Saturday at the Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar by 8pm (Nigerian time).

Nigeria draws Egypt, Mali in U-23 AFCON

Nigeria’s Dream Team VI will vie for a place at the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics together with Algeria, Egypt and Mali as they have been drawn together in Group B.

The results of the draw on Monday at the Caf headquarters in Cairo, Egypt showed that Nigeria will compete in Group B together with Algeria, Egypt and Mali at the forthcoming 2015 Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Senegal

The countries in Group A include hosts, Senegal, South Africa, Zambia and Tunisia. The draw was conducted by Caf Secretary General, Hicham El Amrani and assisted by Caf executive committee member, Amadou Diakite. The final tournament will take place from November 28 – December 12, 2015 in the Senegalese cities of Dakar and M’Bour. The top three teams will qualify automatically to represent Africa at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Falcons crash out of Olympics

The Super falcons of Nigeria have crashed out of the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil after losing 2-1 to Equatorial Guinea on Sunday in Bata. The Falcons who failed to get a win at home could not hold on to the lead Ngozi Okobi gave them and conceded two late goals to lose 2-1.
The Super Falcons failed to live up to their billing at the last Women’s World Cup in Canada and many were hopeful that they would make amends at the Rio Olympics. Having now been knocked out, Nigeria will now be watched from the sidelines, the same way it did during the London Olympics.
