Argentina to host FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023

Argentina, the most successful nation in the FIFA U-20 World Cup with six trophies will host the 2023 edition. 

This development is coming after Indonesia lost the hosting rights after the Bali governor refused to host Israel’s team. The draws will be held on Apr 21 in Zurich with the tournament scheduled from May 20 – June 11. 

“FIFA is delighted to announce that this year’s edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup will take place in Argentina, as the home of the world champions opens its doors to the tomorrow’s superstars of world football, I would like to thank the AFA and particularly its President Claudio Tapia, as well as the governmental authorities, for their commitment to hosting this magnificent event at such short notice. The U-20 World Cup plays a key role in FIFA’s efforts to promote youth football across the world. Since 1977, this tournament has featured some of the greatest players of the past decades, including Diego Armando Maradona, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Erling Haaland and many others. Argentina have won the tournament a record 6 times – 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2007.

Victor Osimhen to join Bayern Munich this summer

Super Eagles player, Victor Osimhen is set for a sensational switch to German side, Bayern Munich this summer. The 24-year-old who joined Napoli from Lille for a club-record fee of €75m in 2020, still has two years left on his contract and is currently valued at €100m.

The serie A top marksman who has netted 21 goals in 23 games is expected to replace Lewandowski  at the club. 

Victor Osimhen, who suffered an injury while on international duty with Nigeria will miss Napoli’s #UCL quarter-final first-leg against AC Milan tomorrow evening due to an abductor injury.

“Victor is not in the conditions to play, unfortunately — so we hope to have him back for return fixture at the Maradona on April 18”,  Aurelio De Laurentiis, Napoli President disclosed.

Henry Thierry reacts to PSG fans’ treatment of Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi’s name was booed at the Parc des Princes when his name was announced in the starting lineup as rumours continue of the Argentine’s summer return to Barcelona. French football legend, Henry Thierry, who played alongside the World Cup winner wasn’t having any of the situation.   

“It’s embarrassing to hear whistles from the Parc. You can’t whistle one of the best players on the team, who has 13 goals and 13 assists this season.” He  said. He has however urged the Barcelona star to end his career at Camp Nou.

“Personally, I would like to see him finish his career at Barcelona, in Europe. After that, I don’t know what he will do. Because the way he left Barcelona after everything he did… I didn’t really like it. For the love of football, he should go back to Barcelona.” He told Amazon Prime.

Getting a managerial role in the Premier League is easy but staying in the dugout is a more serious task.

An unwanted record has been set for the most sackings in a Premier League season. A total of 12 coaches have now lost their jobs in an English Premier league season with Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers and Chelsea’s Graham Potter becoming the latest casualties. Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger inducted into Premier League Hall of Fame

Former Manchester United and Arsenal Football clubs coaches, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger have been inducted into the Premier League’s official Hall of Fame for 2023. They are the first managers to receive this honour.

Launched in 2021, David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney Dennis Bergkamp, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Ian Wright have all been inducted.
“I’m truly delighted to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame. It’s an honour when you receive recognition like this. However, it’s not just about me as a person. It’s about the job at Manchester United and the bond we had over many years, so I’m also proud for the club, the staff and my players. My job was to send the fans home happy. United’s history and my own expectations were the things that drove me, and I then had to try and develop all my players with the same expectations and make sure we could go out and achieve them.” Ferguson who won a record 13 titles and is deemed the most  successful manager in Premier League history said.

He continued, “I feel Arsene is a very worthy inductee as he transformed Arsenal Football Club fantastically. They became a tough team to compete with and we both wanted to win, which motivated us further.
“Through the years since retirement, we’d go for dinner together in a little restaurant he knows well in Switzerland. He is a really interesting man and I enjoy his company, but it is still my job to pick the wine!”
Wenger who was in charge of 828 Premier League matches and a league record 22 campaigns in Arsenal won 3 league titles was also elated about the honour,
“I’d like to be known as someone who loved Arsenal, who respected the values of the club and left it in a position where it can grow and become even bigger,” Wenger said. “To share this with Sir Alex is a great honour for me. It’s like two boxers, you fight like mad and go the distance together. At the end of the day, you have respect and it will be a great opportunity to meet with him, share a good bottle of wine and memories of our old battles.”

8 year-old footballer beats Messi and Neymar’s records.

An 8-year-old footballer and Santos youth player, Kauan Basile has set a new record recently after signing a deal with Nike for 3 years, becoming the youngest ever athlete to do so.

Barcelona’s Messi previously did so at 15, Neymar at 13 and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, who had held the record until recently, did so at 11.

Football icon, Diego Maradona is dead.

Soccer legend, Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60, a source close to his family confirms. Regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the game, he became a household name after inspiring his country to World Cup glory in 1986.

The Argentine, who underwent surgery earlier this month for a blood clot in his brain died of a heart attack.

The office of Argentina’s president will decree three days of national mourning because of Maradona’s death on Wednesday, he died two weeks after being released from a Buenos Aires hospital following brain surgery.

Football heavyweight, Ronaldo has hailed his fellow countryman Neymar after he surpassed him in the all-time goal scoring charts for Brazil. Neymar  scored a hat-trick in Brazil’s 4-2 World Cup qualifying match against Peru on Tuesday, October 14, 2020. The 28 year-old paid tribute to Ronaldo on social media after he posted a photo of him replicating his iconic celebration.

He is now the country’s 2nd-highest men’s scorer of all-time, coming right behind Legendary Brazilian Pele who is the country’s all-time record scorer with 77 goals to his name.

Lionel Messi tops Forbes’ highest-paid football players 2020 list.

Barcelona taliman, Lionel Messi has topped this year’s football rich list, according to Forbes. 
The Argentine who wanted to leave Barcelona this summer will get $92 million for the remaining year of his contract. His total yearly earnings for 2020 including endorsements has been put at $126 million.  Juventus forward Cristinao Ronaldo comes second on $117 million while Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian forward Neymar and teammate Kylian Mbappe, come third and fourth with  their earnings put at $96 million and $42 million respectively.

Liverpool’s Egyptian forward Mo Salah is on the fifth spot at $37 million, Paul Pogba sixth at $34 million. Football fans have expressed their disappointment at Manchester City, following the club’s announcement to commission a statue at the Etihad in honour of David Silva, saying Yaya Toure deserved it better. The Spanish professional footballer Manchester City will get a statue at the Etihad in honor of his 10-year career at the club.

The playmaker will also have a training pitch at the City Football Academy dedicated to him, as well as a mosaic celebrating his role in the famous 6-1 win over Manchester United in 2011.

Club Chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak remarked, “David Silva is a transformational player. A quiet leader who has acted quietly and deliberately and inspired everyone around him. From the youngest academy player to his senior team-mates over the past 10 years”. Also, “He has put a stamp on the team, on this club, its history and even the Premier League as a whole. In doing so, he has been instrumental to the beautiful football philosophy you see today. He was the start of it. As with Vincent before him. The 34-year-old joined City from Valencia in 2010,won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups in his 436 appearances for the club. The statue will be unveiled next year.
