Eden Hazard to leave Madrid at the end of the season.

Spanish giants, Real Madrid have confirmed that Eden Hazard will leave the club at the end of the season. According to sources, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

“Real Madrid C. F. and Eden Hazard have reached an agreement by which the player is disassociated from the club as of June 30, 2023”, the club announces.

It is now uncertain if the Belgian footballer will try new clubs or retire from professional football . Eden Hazard has been part of the club for four seasons, in which he has won 8 titles: 1 European Cup, 1 Club.

Asisat Oshoala wins second UEFA WCL trophy with Barcelona Femeni.

Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala,  has won the 2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League Title with FC Barcelona Femeni. The 28 year-old who missed the Champions League final against Wolfsburg due to injury but the Spanish side fought from two goals down to beat their rivals.

She is Barcelona Femeni’s fourth All-time Highest Goal Scorer, scored 21 league goals in 2022/2023 and was the 2021/22 Spanish Women’s Primera Division Top Scorer with 20 goals.

The Camp Nou is undergoing a facelift soon

Barcelona FC  have confirmed €1.45 billion in funding for a redevelopment plan of the Camp Nou stadium on 1 June. The stadium which first opened in 1957 and remains the largest in Europe is expected to be fully completed by 2026.  Expectation for annual revenue from new stadium is €247m while capacity will be 105,000 spectators.

Recall that the new Camp Nou model was unveiled  7 years ago. Whilst renovations occur at Camp Nou, Barcelona will be moving to the Olympic Stadium next season and hope to be back at Camp Nou by November 2024, which coincides with celebrations for the club’s 125th anniversary.

“Club assets were not used as a guarantee and a mortgage was not taken out on the stadium, the money is re-payable in different instalments to be paid progressively at five, seven, nine, 20 and 24 years, with a flexible structure, including a grace period, the club will start to repay the operation once work has been completed on the stadium, using income generated by Camp Nou.” The Blaugrana confirmed in a statement on Monday.

The new stadium will have a retractable roof covered in 30,000 square metres of solar panels. This energy will be used to power the new 360-degree screen that will run around the entire interior of the stadium, as well as various security systems. In another effort to improve the ground’s sustainability, rainwater will also be collected and recycled.

Some of the investors include Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Key Capital Partners, Legends, JLL, Perez-Llorca, IPG 360, and DLA Piper.

 

 

Henry Thierry reacts to PSG fans’ treatment of Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi’s name was booed at the Parc des Princes when his name was announced in the starting lineup as rumours continue of the Argentine’s summer return to Barcelona. French football legend, Henry Thierry, who played alongside the World Cup winner wasn’t having any of the situation.   

“It’s embarrassing to hear whistles from the Parc. You can’t whistle one of the best players on the team, who has 13 goals and 13 assists this season.” He  said. He has however urged the Barcelona star to end his career at Camp Nou.

“Personally, I would like to see him finish his career at Barcelona, in Europe. After that, I don’t know what he will do. Because the way he left Barcelona after everything he did… I didn’t really like it. For the love of football, he should go back to Barcelona.” He told Amazon Prime.

 

Real Madrid’s Mariano Diaz tests positive to Covid-19.

Real Madrid’s latest coronavirus testing came back with one positive result in the form of Mariano. The 26 year-old forward will not feature against Man City in next month’s Round of 16 second leg tie. He will be in  self-isolation as the Blancos prepare for a Champions League clash with Manchester City.

 “After the Covid-19 tests carried out individually on our first team yesterday by the Real Madrid medical services, our player Mariano has given a positive result. The player is in perfect health and complying with the sanitary isolation protocol at home.” Real announced via a statement on their official website:

Mariano also provided an update on his condition on Instagram. “Hello everyone. I appreciate your messages of support.  I am perfectly well, thank God my family and my environment are also great. Now I am recovering at home and I hope to return to normal soon and be able to be with my teammates and team. Greetings to all.”

Mariano has had no contact with other players and staff.

Former Arsenal manager, Unai Emery appointed Villareal manager.

La Liga side, Villarreal have appointed former Arsenal coach, Unai Emery as their manager, the Spaniard’s first managerial role since his dismissal from Arsenal last November. He replaces Former Villarreal boss Javier Calleja who left the club last week after leading them to a 5th position on the  La Liga. Emery  replaced legend, Arsenal Wenger as manager in May 2018.

Current Barca team lacks identity- Dani Alves

Former Barcelona right-back Dani Alves has offered his thoughts on what is wrong with his former team. The  37-year-old who left Barcelona for Italian giants Juventus in 2016 after almost a decade in Catalonia is of the opinion that the current Blaugrana lacks identity on the pitch.

“What this Barça lacks is the identity it has always had, like Ronaldinho’s Barça, our Barça. The identity of a team that dominates for 90 minutes, 100 minutes, or 150 minutes. Barça are there for people to enjoy. Now what I see, from the outside, is that Barça are just another team. They used to have an understanding throughout the team and made things look easy.” He told Catalunya Radio

Barca were beaten 2-1 at home by Osasuna on Thursday, handing the LaLiga title to their rival, Real Madrid. An emotional Lionel Messi spoke of the need for the club to change to continue the Champions League race.

“We need to change a lot, otherwise we will also lose against Napoli, I already said before that playing like this we won’t be able to fight for the Champions League and you see, we could not even fight for the league. We need to be self-critical.”

La Liga to press criminal charges against Mallorca-Barcelona pitch invader.

La Liga has revealed their decision to press criminal charges against the pitch invader who ran on to the pitch during Real Mallorca’s behind-closed-doors match against Barcelona on Saturday to try to get a photo with Lionel Messi.

The fan, who donned an Argentina kit with Messi’s name and number 10 on the back scaled a two-meter fence to access the stadium, he was later ejected by security personnel and police. Mallorca are currently investigating how he got into the stadium.

A statement from La Liga on Sunday said the man accessed the pitch “without any authorization and disobeying the protocols established by health legislation, as well as disobeying the orders of security staff”. La Liga also wishes to show its absolute condemnation for this type of conduct that puts the health of others at risk and risks damaging the integrity of the competition,” the statement added.

Tax fraud: Diego Costa gets €543,208 fine.

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been fined €543,208 and handed a six-month prison sentence for tax fraud.

The 31 year-old pleaded guilty to defrauding the state of more than €1m by not declaring payments of over €5.15m from his 2014 move to Chelsea in the UK and not did not declare more than €1m in image rights.

He will not serve jail term as Spanish legal system allows sentences under two years for non-violent crimes to be exchanged for a fine.

An Atletico spokesman told the Reuters news agency, “Diego Costa reached an agreement a few months ago with the prosecutor and has already paid the corresponding fine plus interest, and the request for a prison sentence was withdrawn.” 

Real Madrid won’t play at the Bernabéu again this season.

Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez has confirmed that the Los Blancos Will Not Return to Santiago Bernabéu once La Liga returns. The Bernabéu is currently undergoing renovation and was initially scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2022, but now that all games will be played behind closed doors, the club wants to take advantage of the situation to complete the work ahead of schedule. The team will now play their remaining ‘home games’ in the Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium.

“We have made the decision to play all the games in which we will play as the home team in the Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium in our Ciudad Real Madrid,” Pérez wrote. “This decision will allow us to advance in the works of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.”

The Santiago Bernabeu was first completed in 1942 and last upgraded in 1982, the external facade of the stadium will be made up of strips of steel, the roof will have a retractable feature that will allow matches to be played under any weather conditions. Restaurant and entertainment areas will be featured. The rebuild of the stadium is expected to end right before the start of the 2022-2023 season.
