Stephanie Linus' movie, 'DRY' to screen at the 24th PAN African Film Festival

After screening around the world, drawing attention while shining light on controversy and receiving acknowledgement from world leaders, Stephanie Linus’ recent production ‘DRY’ has been selected to screen at the largest and most prestigious black film festival in America – the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF). Also called the quintessential Black festival, PAFF is the largest event during Black History Month, celebrated in the U.S. every February and is scheduled to take place from February 4th –15th in Los Angeles.
“I am so glad that DRY has been selected to screen at the Pan African Film Festival. One of the dreams I had while making this movie is that it would be seen on several platforms across the world and that dream is coming to life.” – Stephanie Linus said.
Also called the quintessential Black festival, PAFF is the largest event during Black History Month, celebrated in the U.S. every February and is scheduled to take place from February 4th–15th in Los Angeles. Sidney Poitier, Phylicia Rashad and Taraji P. Henson and a host of other extraordinary industry professionals both in front and behind camera are amongst those who have been honored by this prestigious festival. ‘DRY’ will be screened on Sunday, February 7th, Saturday, February 13th and Monday, February 15th. 
Produced, directed, and starring Nollywood’s A-List actress, Stephanie Linus, the film is an inspired true story that depicts the life of two young girls living as child brides in West Africa. The movie focuses on child marriage and Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF), journeying into the heart-wrenching details of a culture not too many films dare to explore.
The film stars: Darwin Shaw as Dr. Alex, the legendary Liz Benson Ameye as the Matron, Bill McNamara as Dr. Brown, and Introducing Zubaida Ibrahim Fagge as Halima the teenager who had to endure a life not designed for a child.

Meet Chelsea's new signing, Alexandre Pato

Brazilian footballer, Alexandre Pato has joined Chelsea FC on a six-month loan move from Corinthians the reigning champions have announced. The 26 year-old who was pictured in London on Tuesday has 27 caps and 10 goals for his country and scored 19 times in 59 league games for Corinthians.
“I am so happy to sign for Chelsea. It is a dream for me. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know my new teammates and cannot wait to play. “I thank Chelsea for their support and hope I can repay this faith to the club and its fans.”

Kelechi Nwakali and Samuel Chukwueze pictured with Wenger and Kanu at Arsenal

For several months, Nigerian wonderkids, Kelechi Nwakali and Samuel Chukwueze have been linked to a move to Arsenal. Going by this picture, which shows them posing with African football legend, Kanu Nwankwo, Arsenal coach, Arsene Wenger and CEO, Ivan Gazidis, seems their move has been finalized. The picture was shared by sports journalist, Colin Udoh this morning.   The duo made lasting impressions on the international tournament scene (U-17 World Cup in Chile in 2015.)

Atletico & Real Madrid transfer bans suspended


The Appeal Committee of FIFA has suspended the transfer bans placed on Spanish outfits, Real and Atletico Madrid. Few weeks ago, both clubs were found to have violated several provisions concerning the international transfer and first registration of minor players and were also fined  900,000 and 360,000 Swiss francs respectively.

FIFA has however granted the probationary suspension of the sanction pending the outcome of the appeal.

"I am going to Arsenal to be the best I can"- Kelechi Nwakali

Nigerian wonderkid, Kelechi Nwakali is in London to complete a move to Arsenal FC. The attacking midfielder who earned the player of the tournament award at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup has reportedly agreed a 4 year contract with the club & will have his medical in London before Sunday. He will be be paid around £5m.

“I am going to Arsenal to work and try to be the best I can, With God anything is possible, to work hard to justify my claim for first team football.”  He told Nigerian Tribune. 
The 17 year-old has also picked the no 25 shirt of Gunners legend, Nwankwo Kanu.

Tributes pour in for Nemanja Vidic after announcing retirement from football

Football fans over the globe, soccer stars, football fans, colleagues and Manchester United legends have paid tributes to former Manchester United defender, Nemanja Vidic who called time on his injury-plagued career today. 

“The time has come for me to hang up my boots. The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll. I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big ‘thank you’ to the fans for their support over the years.” The Serbian wrote on Manchester United website.

The 34 year-old  won five Premier League titles and a Champions League with the Red Devils.

Peter Okoye is learning the ropes of football management….pretty fast! The singer jetted off to Turkey early this week to meet with Cameroonian footballer, Samuel Eto’o. The duo were spotted  in London  today. Is the dancer doing a tour of all football clubs in the world? Not impossible!

The war train currently touring the Nigerian entertainment industry has made a stop at Nollywood. The latest drama is being scripted by Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha and fellow colleagues, Uche Jombo, Omoni Oboli, Blessing Effiong and Ufuoma Mcdermott.
It all started with a tweet from Chioma yesterday sparking rumours of a beef between herself and the other women. The sultry actress shared a picture of her colleagues with the caption ” Sometimes…sisters aren’t REALLY sisters! #2016MindingMyOwnBusiness #StayingOnMyLane #MovingOn”

The attention of Uche Jombo was drawn to the post and she swiftly tagged other people who were

Dara had just finished teaching
her first class the following Monday morning when a student met her on the way
with a handwritten note. She hurried off to the headmistress’ office where an
unfamiliar female corper in uniform sat before the headmistress.


“You sent for me, ma?”
“Yes, corper Dara,” the woman
replied, motioning for her to take a seat. “I’m pleased to inform you that we
have a new corper joining us. She has just been redeployed to Gombe and was
posted here, and as the ever resourceful person that you are, I thought you
might like to meet and welcome her, especially as you are both in the same
batch. She’s Uju by name.”
Dara and Uju exchanged brief
smiles as the headmistress continued, “Corper Uju has just reported here this
morning, so she’ll be given the rest of the week off to settle before resuming
fully next week. She’ll be occupying the room next to yours at the lodge so
please help her get comfortable. I know you must be happy to have a fellow
corper in the school now. Congrats.”

Dara, shocked, asked Uju, “You
relocated to Gombe? Why? My parents have barely forgiven me for not leaving
here!”

“It’s personal,” Uju replied dismissively.

“Alright. I’m sure we’ll get to it
later.” Dara smiled. “Will you take my number so I’ll be around when you move
in?”

They exchanged numbers, and as
Dara left for her next class, she thought of Chika. They hadn’t spoken since
the very awkward day at his place and it was unusual for him not to have called
or reached out somehow. Thinking she had probably embarrassed him although she
felt embarrassed herself, she decided to break the ice.
                    Hi. There’s a new corper at my PPA. Wonder if she’ll join our CDS.
His reply came almost instantly.
                    She already did. Met her @ secretariat this morning.

Dara had never really celebrated
Valentine’s Day. It was afterall a day for lovers and she hadn’t had any. The
yearly red-themed youth fellowship ‘secret’ gifts exchange at church usually
made the day.
This year, all roads in Gombe led
to the Mallam Sidi camp for the batch A passing out parade. She didn’t expect
to have any fun there when a batch was done with their service already while
she still had eight more months to go, but being at the event gave her hope
that it would be her turn someday.
Chika was waiting by the camp gate
when she got there, and his warm smile quickly dispelled all thoughts of hostility.

“The next POP would be yours. Does
knowing that feel as good as I imagine?” Dara grinned at him.
He laughed. “I suppose. It’s
cool.”
“The parade hasn’t started, has
it?” she asked, squinting to see the parade ground at a distance.
“Nah. The governor’s probably just
woke up now. They can’t start without him.”

He made no move to leave the gate,
so she asked him, “Waiting for someone?”

“Yeah. How’ve you been?”

“Not bad. You?”

“I was starting to wonder if you
weren’t lost,” he said loudly, chuckling.
“Lost?” Puzzled, she look up at
his face and turned to follow his gaze to see who he had been talking to.
Uju smiled and explained when she
was close enough, “I stopped to get something at a shop on my way. Have you
been waiting for long? I tried to call but couldn’t get through.”

“Uju! Hi! I didn’t know you were
back in town,” Dara said, surprised.
“Yeah, I’ve been at Biliri with my
dad. He stays there,” Uju replied.
“Oh. I didn’t know that.”

“I moved in at the lodge late last
night. I guessed you might have been asleep and I didn’t want to disturb.”

Dara frowned. “Are you serious?
You couldn’t have disturbed in any way, we live right next to each other now.”

Uju shrugged wordlessly.

“Shall we proceed?” said Chika,
both girls on either of his sides.

Fast-rising Nigerian actor, Emmanuel Imani set for Hollywood stardom

Fast-rising British Nigerian actor Emmanuel Imani, who is set to take Hollywood by storm in 2016, with the premiere of his debut Hollywood movie titled Criminal, which sees Imani starring alongside three of the biggest actors in the world – Oscar Award winners Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones, as well as BAFTA Award winner Gary Oldman.
 
Hailing from South London, Emmanual Imani began his acting career in 2013, making his theatre debut as part of the critically acclaimed play A Thousand Miles Of History, which was directed by Harold Finley. Imani then went on to star in his first feature film, 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, alongside Chris Pine and Oscar Award nominated actress Keira Knightley.
 
2015 saw Imani starring in British independent feature film Invisible Men. The critically acclaimed film, which was premiered at the 2015 British Urban Film Festival and supported by Channel 4, captured Imani playing a Nigerian immigrant who invites his friend from Nigeria to travel to London to start a new life. He also stars in future horror flick Servants Quarters to be released in the summer.
 
Later this year, Emmanuel Imani will also be looking to leave his mark on Nigerian theatre, as part of the cast of hugely popular D’Banj-inspired Afrobeats play Oliva Tweest, which will be debuting in Nigeria, as part of the Lagos Theatre Festival. Oliva Tweest first debuted in 2013 at London’s West End to rave reviews, before another at the renowned Hackney Empire last year.
