KENNETH OMERUO, ROMELU LUKAKU, ADNAN JANUZAJ OTHERS SHORTLISTED FOR EUROPE'S BEST YOUNG PLAYER AWARD

Eight Premier League players; Chelsea's Kenneth Omeruo, Everton's Romelu Lukaku, Arsenal's Serge Gnabry, Yaya Sanogo (Arsenal), Adnan Januzaj from Manchester United, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Manchester City's Matija Nastasic and Tiago Ilori from Liverpool have made this year's Golden boy award shortlist for Europe's best young player.

The winner will be announced later this year. Past winners of the award include Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas, Rafael van der Vaart, Anderson and Isco.

MISS NIGERIA 2013, EZINNE AKUDO WRITES ON HOW TO STOP RAPE& HELP VICTIMS

 
The incumbent Miss Nigeria, Ezinne Akudo is the latest celebrity to lend her voice on the plaguing issue of rape. She writes on how to stop the dastardly act and help victims. An interesting read! I find it insightful too
About a year ago, I watched my friend go through the harrowing ordeal of trying to recover from rape; it was an experience that changed her life….and mine as well. Its easier to shrug off certain painful experiences when they happen to faceless names you neither know nor have a relationship with. Most of us don’t really understand how horrific such things could be until it strikes close to home; a friend, a loved one, a family member. One thing I haven’t yet understood, despite my numerous pondering, is what the average rapist gains from inflicting such violence on another human being. How can a human being gain pleasure in debasing a lady while watching her go through hell in the process? I know there are all kinds of psychological, sociological and even spiritual explanations for why the mind of a man could be so warped as to engage in such dastardly acts.

 

However, in the face of the reality of the effects on the victim, I must admit that my mind still has great difficulty in grasping any kind of explanation to justify such behaviour. Everyday I see headlines of rape cases and I’m seriously grieved. Not just for the victims but also for our nation because it seems to me that this phenomenom has become an insatiable monster eating away at the fabric of our society and little is being done to curb its rampage. If you aren’t fed up, I definitely am. Which brings me to the most important question of all: How do we stop this madness and help those who have been affected by it? The key to dealing effectively with any issue is to first of all see it for what it is. Rape is one of if not the most brutal and atrocious gender-based form of violence that can be committed against women. Women are violated not just physically but also psychologically and apart from that, the devastating effects on rape survivors leave behind a complicated tangle of problems that make dealing with it a whole lot harder.

 

One of the major problems associated with rape cases is that victims who have survived rape ordeals are usually reluctant to speak about it for reasons such as the stigma attached to having been raped, the difficulties faced in obtaining a conviction, fear of being rejected by loved ones and family members, fear of public humiliation and the difficulty of giving a positive or accurate identification of the perpetrator. (It is important to know that in cases where the victim and perpetrator previously had a sexual relationship, the victim’s chances of obtaining a conviction is diminished). Despite these hurdles to openness, there are cases where the victim sometimes confides in another to ease the burden and often their first contact automatically takes upon the role of a counsellor. This may be a family member, friend, police officer, doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist. The way this ‘counsellor’ reacts will, more often than not, determine how quickly the healing proccess is triggered to help victims recover and get over their injuries and trauma.

 

Now here is a fact; most times, these pseudo- counselors are, more-often-than-not, ordinary people who have no form of experience or professional training whatsoever to provide the proper response needed. Sometimes, washed over by feelings of inadequacy, futility, shock and a vast plethora of human emotions, such people resort to what they think is the best response which usually turns out to be not what the victim needs at that moment. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of having to comfort/encourage some friends who were raped or abused, and I can assure you it is not an easy thing. It was almost as painful for me as it was for them. This is not always a matter of empathy, as those feelings of inadequacy strike, no matter how sympathetic you feel. In instances where that much needed comfort and assurance is lacking, the victim usually withdraws, having failed to get the initial desired response and its usually harder for them to open up beyond that point, stifling the healing process.

 

One of the ways I think we can help in our own little way is to become aware that this is a real threat and that there is a possibility that we might come across at least one rape victim in our life time, judging from the frequency of its occurrence. How we respond to these survivors can set them on the path to recovery. While we work to eliminate rape and abuse, let us see ourselves as part of those who will take responsibility for helping rape survivors. That means that we must prepare ourselves for the eventuality of handling such cases because a task this sensitive should not be taken for granted. I would advise everyone reading this to do a little research on how exactly to deal with a rape victim.

"WE ARE SHOCKED"- NIGERIAN AMBASSADOR WRITES US SENATOR OVER INSULT ON NIGERIANS

On Monday October 21st 2013, Senator Ted Cruz, a US Texas Republican Senator while addressing a crowd pointed out that Nigerian email scammers are behind the Obamacaresignup website. "You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email
scammers have become a lot less active lately. They all have been hired to run the Obamacare website." He stated.

Ambassador Professor Ade Adefuye, who incidentally is the Head of Mission Embassy of Nigeria in Washington DC has however expressed his shock over the statement via a letter penned to the US Senator, he also asked him to offer an apology to Nigerians. Dear Senator,RE: NIGERIAN EMAIL SCAMMERS AND OBAMACAREYou are no doubt aware of the reaction of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to a statement credited to your good self on the above. Our immediate reaction at the Embassy is to assume that you were wrongly quoted and that the statement would be denied. We are however surprised that this has not happened. We have no choice than to assume that the statement was deliberately made by you. For a start we are shocked that a high profile Senator of a country which is at the forefront in building a peaceful and stable world in which nations and peoples treat each other with mutual respect could be engaged in an act which offends the sensitivities of an important component of his constituency.Distinguished Senator I am sure you are sufficiently familiar with the constructive contributions which Nigerians have made to economic, social and political lives of Texas especially in the Houston area. Every country has its own share of law
breakers. To use the activities of few as an opportunity to cast aspersions on the integrity of a country and its people is not only unfair but also excessively offensive.You yourself made the point that the so-called email scammers have disappeared from the scene. But it is not because they were recruited to work on Obamacare. It is because of the successful efforts of our government

AC MILAN HIRES EX POLICE MAN TO KEEP MARIO BALOTELLI OUT OF TROUBLE

Trust me, this is the funniest football news I've heard in weeks, if not months. We all know Mario Balotelli hardly stays out of trouble, he unleashes it anytime anyday, to keep this silly behaviour in check, AC Milan has hired an ex police officer, chief Filippo Ferri to control him/ his excesses.

His former coach, Jose Mourinho was open to the suggestion. The Chelsea boss was quoted thus, "Mario is a great guy. I don't know what Ferri's specific tasks will be, but certainly with a lunatic like him you never get bored."

Meanwhile Ferri who also happens to be AC Milan-s head of security is a hard nut to crack, perfect person for the job If you ask me. He was relieved of his job as a policeman after his harsh treatment of protesters at the G8 summit which took place in 2001.

FIFA PRESIDENT, SEPP BLATTER PAYS TRIBUTE TO RASHIDI YEKINI

If you think Nigerians especially footballers are the only ones who remembered the late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini few days ago then you are wrong. The footballer who passed on in May 2012 after a long battle with an undisclosed ailment would have clocked 50 years old on October 23, 2013.

Not a few Nigerians were surprised to read FIFA President, Sepp Blatter's tribute to the iconic sport star two days ago via his official twitter page. He also posted a famous picture of Yekini celebrating a goal during the USA '94 tournament.

He tweeted "Rasheed Yekini would have been 50 today. His name as scorer of Nigeria's 1st World Cup finals goal, lives on".

FUNNY BUT ANNOYING ISSUES ABOUT NIGERIAN MOVIES (CONT'D)

Lemme first of all apologise for the bringing the concluding part of this writeup very very late. I promised to be back the following week but weeks rolled into months and I forgot about it. If you’ve not read the Part 1 of this article, you’ve missed lots, check the link below and read up. So, here I am, with my remaining points. Click here if you missed the part 1.

11) Plagiarism– i saw a film some time ago, I was so impressed by the unique
storyline that i persuaded few friends to get their copies. Few months after, I
discovered it was a duplicate of an old Indian film and this happens every
freaking time.
(12) Flashback in a flashback– while collating points for this article, i
asked a few friends to send in their thoughts and a good number of them
mentioned this multiple flashbacks in a flashback issue. It irks me a lot. Mr
David sees an old classmate of his, suddenly, they launch into a flashback, in
that flash back is Miss Sarah carrying a baby, then another flashback of how
they argued over the paternity of the baby comes up. Total Crap!
(13) Posters- You find about to 6 or 8 scenes on a single movie jacket. And
this reason for this is not far-fetched, to lure viewers.
(14) Unrealistic comedy scenes- please for how long will a gateman be
insulting his boss or his boss’ girlfriend or wife. Well, a bit of exaggeration
isn’t bad to spice things up but this has become a norm.
(15) Roles– The person playing the role of a Doctor in a Yoruba film is a
go-to actor for crime roles, with badly-constructed English sentences and
unkempt look. I understand that a thespian has to be versatile but No, Ajigijaga
isn’t appropriate for that role.
(16) Hairstyle-  An actress would wear two hairstyles throughout a movie. One
hairstyle throughout her university days and the second during her wedding and
child’s naming ceremonies. Whatever happened to wigs?  Not good enough.
(17) Unthinkable titles– When it comes to movies with absurd titles. Nigerian films take
the cake.  What in this world inspired titles
like Tear my bra, fuel subsidy, Oga at the top, Limpopo Babes and the likes?
Well, be certain that such movies have nothing to offer.
(18) Locations- What’s with the idea of turning sitting rooms to police
stations, balconies into prisons? Or asking about 6-10 ladies and guys to start
walking around a shopping complex with books just to make it look like they are
in a campus. You think we won’t know?

MISS NIGERIA 2013 HONOURED IN IMO STATE

She got the Miss Nigeria 2013 crown, wads of notes in the bank, a ride, a tastefully furnished apartment in a low-density area in Lagos, Miss Ezinne Akudo Anyaoha has not stopped reaping the dividends of being a beauty queen.

For emerging the winner of the pageant and serving as an inspiration to many ladies, the Imo State House of Assembly has named the 22 year-old queen the face of Imo State. She got a cash gift of N500,000 and a popular road in Owerri has also been named after her.
