Didier Drogba opens hospital for children and less privileged women in Ivory Coast.

Touching lives where it matters most. This adds to the reasons ex Ivory Coast international, ‎Didier Drogba is a worshipped figure in his country. The Chelsea legend  has launched one of the five hospitals h‎e promised to build for his country as ‎part of his charity activities.
Adducing reasons for undertaking the project, the superstar sometime in 2009 said “When I visited a hospital in Abidjan this year, I was shocked by the terrible conditions. We hear about all the incurable diseases,  but these kids are just as likely to die from diabetes because there is no insulin available. It was then I decided the Foundation’s first project should be to build and fund a hospital giving people basic healthcare and a chance just to stay alive.”

The well-appointed $1 million ‎complex is situated in the Attecoube district of ‎‎Abidjan and has ‎like the ultrasound room, a maternal and child ‎protection unit, an x-ray block, an ultra modern laboratory, a ‎pharmacy and hospitalisation and isolation wards.
‎According to Guy Roland Tanoh, secretary of Didier Drogba Foundation, the new hospital will cater for less ‎privileged women and children in the Ivorian capital and is expected to treat around 50,000 patients every year‎.
The remaining four hospitals are still under construction in the
cities of Yamoussoukro, San Pedro, Man and Korhogo and they will be launched in the coming months.

Oba of Lagos not a member of APC, he cannot speak for us – Tinubu

Former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu while speaking at a rally held yesterday for the Gubernatorial candidate of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode said the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu is not a member of the APC and can not speak on behalf of the party.
This is coming few days after the paramount ruler came under fire for threatening the Igbos in the state with death.
The APC chieftain mentioned that he is the first Yoruba governor to ever appoint an Igbo commissioner ‎and that the opposition party are making baseless accusations against the APC.

Tinubu said, “The Oba is not a politician. His job is to accommodate all political parties whether PDP, APC or SDP. So, what did he (Ubah) go and do at the palace? Is the Oba a politician?

“To you Igbo, don’t we pay your children’s school fees like others? Or is it the palace that pays for it? When we conducted an exam and a spelling competition, an Igbo boy, Ebuka, from Anambra, came first and he became the governor for one day.
“Those that won the competition three times in a row were Igbo. Ebuka was sent to Switzerland computer school and then Obafemi Awolowo University. We did not say he was an Igbo boy and he would not enjoy. He became an executive in Oando and he is now in Canada.
“Another boy, Felix, won and went to Switzerland and OAU. We paid his scholarship; we did not deny him because he is Igbo.”

Rivers APC set to receive 10,000 PDP defectors

Arrangements have reached an advanced stage by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State to receive about 10,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who have indicated interest in joining APC. Rivers APC Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, disclosed this in a statement issued Tuesdayin Port Harcourt.
Rivers APC is pleased to welcome these patriots in advance and to assure them that they have a found a home in the party of liberation. We are happy with their decision that Rivers State must not be allowed to play opposition politics in the incoming Federal Government of General Muhammadu Buhari and have fixed Friday, 10th April, 2015, to formally receive them at the APC State Secretariat at Forces Avenue, Port Harcourt,” Ikanya said.
He described the decision of the mammoth crowd of PDP members to defect to APC as equivalent to the breaking of PDP’s backbone in Rivers State. “With this development, it would be safe to say that Rivers State PDP Leader and gubernatorial candidate, Chief Nyesome Wike, is now a commander without troops.

Wike is irreversibly on his way to political oblivion and his fate shall become sealed on April 11 when he will be trounced by our governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, during the governorship polls,” Ikanya added.

Photo: Turkey invades pitch during football match

Who even brought live turkey to the stadium? Lol. So a turkey (probably) jumped from the grasp of its owner and invaded the pitch during a match between Djerba and Monastic held recently in Tunisia.

The turkey from hell reportedly evaded attempts by match officials and some players to stop him….or her. An official even fell over during the race.
Someone from the stands decided to help out, he walked into the pitch, stamped the turkey and took it away.

Woman left paralysed after using friend's makeup brush.

Jo Gilchrist, a mother of one was left wheelchair-bound after using a friend’s make-up brush to cover a pimple.

Her friend had a staph infection on her face and she had no idea she could contract the infection through her brush. The infection spread through her body, affected her spine and now her chances of walking again are very slim.

“I was in incredible pain and nothing would work. I honestly thought I was going to die – the pain was worse than childbirth.” The 27 year-old said.

Jo is to stay in the hospital for another 3months and was told  she may never walk again and will never have control over her bladder or bowel.

‎”They said (the numbness) would go all the way up my arms and into my chest and when that happened I’d have to be put in an induced coma and learn to breathe again.’
Scary! Now I understand why some ladies don’t like sharing their makeup items.

Zinedine Zidane confirms Raheem Sterling is on Real Madrid's radar

‎French football legend and the Los Blancos B team manager, Zinedine Zidane has confirmed that Liverpool player, Raheem Sterling is on Real Madrid’s watch list.

We know who Raheem Sterling is, and of course we are monitoring him as a player.  There are very few players in the world who can improve the Real Madrid squad, so it is going to make sense we monitor the progress of the best young players in the world. We monitored [Gareth] Bale for over a year, the same with Isco and also [Raphaël] Varane.
“We monitor many of the best young players in Europe, then if we feel they have something to offer Real Madrid we will contact their club and try and make the next step.” He said

Opinion: Nigeria’s Democracy Is Still Fragile, Please Handle With Care! | By: Soji Apampa

The nation heaved a big sigh of relief the moment Goodluck Jonathan gracefully conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari and averted the rivers of blood that local and international punters projected would flow in the streets of most major cities across Nigeria – a doomsday vision easily dismissed by the uninitiated.
However, according to Richard L. Sklar, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the African Studies Center of the University of California, USA, Nigeria’s ruling elite have shown capacity to negotiate compromise solutions that serve most of their ends, often at the expense of the public good, but their penchant for displays of brinkmanship could inadvertently — or in some cases deliberately — send their political struggles spiraling out of control and into the streets. Thank God those prediction did not come true.

What most onlookers had feared was that undue political interference in the electoral process would have resulted in the declaration of results unpalatable to a majority of the people, thus sending the Nigerian State into a tailspin – thankfully that was not the case.
Instead, what we witnessed was the first ever regime change achieved through the ballot box rather than the barrel of a gun. In other words, the people’s victory achieved and handed to the APC was no small feat at all.
Sklar further advises that if democracy is to consolidate in Nigeria, many of the elite must perceive that the democratic system serves their interests better than extra-systemic alternatives such as coups or warlordism, and the system must be able to check those elite who conspicuously break the rules. So, the people may well have tamed the strongmen but our democracy is still fragile and must be handled with care.
The emergence of Goodluck Jonathan as President of Nigeria destabilised the old order and ushered in some very complicated and dangerous reactions within Nigeria’s ruling elite.
The State’s monopoly over the use of force was well and truly broken, and our military humiliated in the process – the real handlers of Boko Haram for instance, are yet to be unmasked but Goodluck himself suggested some were in his cabinet.
To entrench the new order the resources of State were rapidly drawn down and converted into private funds for political patronage to the extent that our Excess Crude Account and External Reserves were inexplicably depleted (for example through dubious fuel subsidy claims and payments, the missing $20bn, etc.) and not enough done to stem outright theft of crude oil – all attempts to get Mr. President to see these acts as corrupt fell on deaf ears since to him, these were just acts of “stealing.”
The impression was given that state policy was up for “sale” as many corporate leaders took turns in planting their candidates in strategic public posts in order to get policies formulated to their benefit – again this was part of normal life in the past six years as there was a feeling it was the “turn” of the South-South geopolitical zone, from which Jonathan hails, and collaborators in the South-East to call the shots.
And last but not the least, a new narrative emerged that amplified the propaganda that Northern, Islamic interests have ruled Nigeria far too long and it was time for a Southern, Christian to “rule” even if this was at the expense of the wishes of the majority.
The net effect of all these was a Nigeria where people across social and economic divides were mired in despair – no hope of a united Nigeria with a better future and less corruption.
Whilst these uncomfortable adjustments were being permitted, those who could read the bigger picture could see that new alliances and power blocs were also emerging elsewhere in Nigeria.
It might at first appear that the emergence of the All Progressives Congress (APC), an alliance of major Nigerian opposition parties, was grossly underestimated by the ruling People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria (PDP) but that would not be true at all – what was ruled out was the possibility that a credible ticket could be fielded by the APC.
“The move that changed everything” as the APC dubbed it was the fielding of a ticket that would represent a bridge across the major fissures in Nigerian society – across the North-South divide; Muslim-Christian divide, Military-Civilian divide; Experience-Professionalism divide; Technocrat-Politician divide and so on.
On so many levels, the duo of Buhari and Osinbajo represented a hope and a dream big enough to unite Nigerians on so many levels that the PDP failed to identify before it was too late. In fact, at a point, President Jonathan was reported as complaining that “Osinbajo is my problem; everything was fine until he emerged” or words to that effect.
The world has hailed the historic choice of the ballot over bullets but is this really evidence that the ruling elite has finally perceived that the democratic system serves their interests better than extra-systemic alternatives such as coups or warlordism? Does this mean a true consolidation of democracy in Nigeria? Can the people really check elite impunity and wanton disregard for the rule of law?
The evidence would appear when our democratic system is able to check those elite who conspicuously break the new rules set by the people, until then our democracy is still fragile and Nigerians must be watchful and assertive and guard the democratic space, voice and leverage they have won with everything they have.‎

Impeachment Saga: PDP Loyalists Block Ekiti House of Assembly Entrances (Photos)

The plot to stop the impeachment of Ayodele Fayose as Ekiti State Governor took a dramatic dimension today as many PDP loyalists barricaded roads leading to the state Assembly complex.

Their decision to block the roads came after they were informed of the APC members of the state House of Assembly’s plans to hold a sitting this morning to begin the Governor’s impeachment proceedings.
