How I was robbed in Unilag- Blogger, Helen Ozor

A lot of things happen to people at the University of Lagos but we only get to hear a few of these things or we may not even hear about these things at all. For about a month, I have been taking photography classes at Yaba. Yesterday, 4th of August, my photography coach fixed our class at the Sports Centre at the University of Lagos. I drove into the premises at about 2pm. Meanwhile, a sporting event organized by MTN took place at the sports centre yesterday. After my class at about 5pm, I got to the car park and discovered that my car had been burgled with three of the glass wound down. My camera bag containing 2 lenses, 64gig memory card, batteries, camera cable, blackberry Q10, another bag containing my wallet, notepads, GTB ATM card, ID card, voters card, money , drivers Licence were all stolen from the car. I also discovered that my car key could not lock the door.

The security guards at the sports centre referred me to their security office where I made a statement. After I narrated my ordeal, one of the security officer said ‘You’re lucky they didn’t go with your car’. I was also asked to report the case at the Sabo police station. When I narrated what happened to the officer in charge of the case at the station, he made me understand that this isn’t the first time people would report cases of theft to them. Apparently, the situation is getting out of hand. Just incase you would be attending an event at Unilag or you have some engagement within the premises of the institution, please note that your things are not safe. You park at your own risk despite the presence of security guards.

EPL success is a blessing and a curse – Biola Kazeem

One of Nigeria’s foremost sport analysts, Biola Kazeem has tagged the tremendous success of the English Premier League as a blessing and equally, a curse to its indigenous country. He mentioned this in an online chat he had with Loladeville yesterday. The chat kicked off on Twitter by 8pm with both accounts – @loladeville_ and @biolakazeem as well as the HashTag – #Loladevillechat

Biola was reacting to a question on the homegrown player rule that compels EPL clubs to play home grown talent in order to improve the quality of indigenous English players. He claimed the success of the EPL will always give the clubs the room to go for the best players while the English players will have to be good to really get played as the rule will only but give them a chance.

Furthermore, Biola believes that the signing of Cech by Arsenal will give them a much needed balance ahead of the new season. He argued that the signing may be important than getting a striker which seem to be a more pressing need. He hinged his argument on the fact that Manchester City had the highest goalscorer in the league the previous season but failed to win it.
On the teams in Manchester; Biola spoke high of Ed Woodward who he believes has made some great moves and more importantly, brought down the wage bill and reduced average age of the Manchester United squad.

In the same vein, he opined that Manchester City have made some good signings including that of Raheem Sterling although he admitted that was extortionate.
Speaking of good signings, Biola thinks the loan move for Falcao and Wilnaldjum to Newcastle doesn’t entirely belong in that category.

In conclusion, he is looking out for Liverpool whom he believes will score goals aplenty, Stoke City and crystal Palace while also anticipating a far more dramatic end to the summer transfer window.

6 things you didn't know about the newly appointed NNPC GMD

President Muhammadu Buhari today appointed Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He took over from Dr. Joseph Thlama Dawha. Below are some of the facts you should know about the NNPC helmsman

1) He was born 58 years ago and he hails from Onicha Ugbo, in Aniocha North local government area of Delta State. He holds the titles of Odogwu and Omeudo of Onicha Ugbo‎
2) He is married to two women, Elizabeth and Mariam. The first wife, Elizabeth has three children – Nkem, Emeka and Uche.

3) He is a first class graduate of Law, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the Nigerian Law School. He also has Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Law from the Harvard Law School.
4) He kickstarted his working career with the Nigerian/American Merchant Bank before moving on to Texaco Nigeria Limited where he remained for about eight years before joining ExxonMobil. 
5) He is an author of three legal books as well as the publisher of the popular Hints and Chanelle magazines, Complete Fashion Magazine as well as YES! International.
6) Veteran writers like Toni Kan, Reuben Abati, Kayode Ajala, etc wrote for his papers.

Church of England apologises over the mistreatment of Bishop, Samuel Ajayi Crowther

After how many years?‎ The Church of England has issued a formal apology over the mistreatment of Africa’s first bishop, Samuel Ajayi Crowther. The Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the Church of England, Justin Welby  a ‘thanksgiving and repentance’ service marking the 150th anniversary of Bishop Crowther’s ordination, said:

“This is a service of thanksgiving and repentance. Thanksgiving for the extraordinary life, which we commemorate [and] repentance, shame and sorrow for Anglicans who are reminded of the sin of many of their ancestors.”

“We in the Church of England need to say sorry that someone was properly and rightly consecrated Bishop and then betrayed and let down and undermined. It was wrong.”

He continued : “In spite of immense hardship and despite the racism of many whites, he evangelised so effectively that he was eventually ordained Bishop, over much protest. He led his missionary diocese brilliantly, but was in the end falsely accused and had to resign, not long before his death.”

“Crowther did not make himself grand. He lived out the commands of the words he took at his consecration. And from his time forward, God has demonstrated his grace through that ministry. Today well over 70 million Christians in Nigeria are his spiritual heirs.
“Today we honour him and in so doing The Lord Jesus Christ whom he served. We are sorry for his suffering at the hands of Anglicans in this country. Learning from their foolishness and from his heroism, we seek to be a church that does not again exclude those whom God is calling. We seek new apostles, and the grace to recognise them when they come.”

Regarded as the father of Anglicanism in Nigeria, Bishop Crowther, who was born as Ajayi in western Nigeria in 1807, is credited with bringing many Nigerians to Christ. So great was his impact that he was ordained the first African Anglican bishop in 1864, despite great protest.
A former slave, Bishop Crowther became a great linguist, translator, scholar and mission teacher. He is also credited with producing the Yoruba Bible and greatly influenced how government’s improved their view of Africa in the 1800s.

But despite his passion and high achievements, Bishop Crowther’s mission was undermined and dismantled in the 1880s by racist white Europeans, including some of his fellow missionaries.
According to reports compiled by historians, prejudiced fellow Anglican missionaries wrongly questioned the moral values and competency of Bishop Crowther and his African staff – and systematically dismantled his mission and undermined his work. In the end, he resigned.
Researchers at the Boston University’s School of Theology in the US wrote: “Mission policy, racial attitudes and evangelical spirituality had taken new directions, and new sources of European missionaries were now available. By degrees, Crowther’s mission was dismantled: by financial controls, by young Europeans taking over, by dismissing, suspending or transferring the African staff. Crowther, desolated, died of a stroke.”

Khedira out for two months

Juventus new signing, Sami Khedira has been ruled out of action for two months following a thigh injury he sustained at the weekend. Khedira sustained the injury while chasing the ball in his first game for the Old lady which was a friendly against Marseille they lost 2-0.
Khedira managed only 628 minutes for Real last season due in part to a succession of minor knocks and sprains.
He also missed the World Cup final due to a muscular injury he picked up during the warm-up, while a knee ligament injury in 2013 kept him out of action for almost six months.

Juventus set off for Shanghai on Sunday with worries growing ahead of Saturday’s Italian Supercoppa against Lazio in Shanghai. Juve, who allowed Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal to leave this summer, have now seen their midfield options further reduced by Khedira’s injury, and they also have problems in defence after Giorgio Chiellini suffered a thigh injury last week.
The Serie A season starts on Aug. 23 with Juve hosting Udinese, while they will play their first Champions League fixture on Sept. 15 or 16.

Falcons crash out of Olympics

The Super falcons of Nigeria have crashed out of the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil after losing 2-1 to Equatorial Guinea on Sunday in Bata. The Falcons who failed to get a win at home could not hold on to the lead Ngozi Okobi gave them and conceded two late goals to lose 2-1.
The Super Falcons failed to live up to their billing at the last Women’s World Cup in Canada and many were hopeful that they would make amends at the Rio Olympics. Having now been knocked out, Nigeria will now be watched from the sidelines, the same way it did during the London Olympics.

Benzema is going nowhere – Benitez

Real Madrid manager, Rafael Benitez has rebuffed claims that striker Karim Benzema will join English side, Arsenal Fc. Benitez says he believes the striker has no reason to leave the club as he is very happy with him and would love to keep him at the club.

“Benzema, I think, is going to stay with us,” he told reporters ahead of his side’s Audi Cup semi-final clash with Tottenham. “I am very happy with him. I have no reason to think he will go.”
The Spanish coach is happy with the squad he has got but believes more signings will be made as they look to improve on last season, in which they lost out on La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey to Barcelona, though he refused to comment on the potential signing of David De Gea from Manchester United.

“I said before that Madrid have signed some players and have a great squad, but I aim to improve the team and to be as competitive as we have always been. I have said in five press conferences that I do not want to talk about players of other teams. We have very good goalkeepers in Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla.”

Blatter steps out of IOC

Embattled FIFA president, Sepp Blatter has relinquished his position on the International Olympic Committee as he deemed it ‘inappropriate’. IOC president, Thomas Bach confirmed this after disclosing that Blatter informed him through a letter on July 23 that he would not stand again.
Bach said: “[Blatter] does not deem it to be appropriate to stand for re-election for eight years knowing that after seven months his term would come to an end.”

Blatter, an IOC member since 1999, would have had to retire from his IOC term next year anyway because he turns 80 in March. Blatter will step down as FIFA president in February, a decision he made in June following the bribery scandal that has led to the indictments of top FIFA officials. Blatter himself has not been indicted and denies any wrongdoing.

Rafael in Lyon ahead of an imminent move

Manchester United full back, Rafael has been spotted in an hotel in Lyon reportedly in a bid to secure a move to the French club. The Brazilian has been told he isn’t in Louis Van Gaal’s plan as the arrival of Darmian Matteo has compounded his woes.
Aulas has now confirmed that the Brazilian, who has one year remaining on his contract, is close to sealing a transfer to the French side. L’Equipe had earlier reported that Rafael, who is set to compete with Christophe Jallet for the right-back spot at Lyon, was due to have a medical on Monday.
The Times has said Rafael will cost Lyon around £2.1 million and is set to sign a four-year deal.
Rafael last started a league game for United in October.
