Jose Mourinho is taking a break from football. Read his first statement since sacking.

Ex Chelsea coach, Jose Mourinho has been trending on social media for the past few days for a not-so-pleasant reason. It is no longer news that he was dismissed by his club on Thursday after a disastrous run to start the season that saw the Blues drop to the 16th on the Premier League table
The Portuguese has released an official statement via his co-representatives at CAA Sports and Polaris Sports,
Statement in full:
“José Mourinho is pleased that he returned to Chelsea Football Club because he was able to give the fans another Premier League title, which they had not won for many years. He is immensely proud of his eight trophies at Chelsea, and thanks the fans for all their support throughout his two spells at the club.

“During his career, José has sometimes chosen to leave a club, but only at Chelsea has the club decided that he should leave.

“Each time represents for him the end of a cycle, and the opportunity to start a new one. José hopes that his future after Chelsea this time will be as successful as when he left the club in 2007.

“He will not be taking a sabbatical, he isn’t tired, he doesn’t need it, he is very positive, and is already looking forward.

“Because of his love of football, you will see José at football grounds working and supporting friends. He will not be attending any high-profile games because he wants to discourage any speculation about his future.

“José will remain living in London and hopes he and his family will be given the opportunity to do this privately.”

“José will not speak about his current situation for the foreseeable future. He asks the media to respect this decision.”

Yoruba way of greeting is not health conscious | By: Femi Oladele

Respect for the conservative Yoruba man is key to everything in life, but I think we need a rethink just as we need to rethink many of the Yoruba proverbs; they are now obsolete and no longer relevant.
Many prevailing circumstances have defied their postulations; and I make bold to say that they weren’t after all sacrosanct; they were postulated by men given their levels of exposure; hence circumstantial.
This is however not to underscore their importance from the historical view and not to mention the fact that some may be universal lasting truths.

However, one cherished tradition is in focus today: prostrating.
I am a bit intrigued that it has an English word #chuckles. A Yoruba male is expected to lie face down to greet an elderly (like the pushup position). While some insists that the belly touches the ground, many variants of the greeting style have emerged given civilization. I want to consider this style of greetings in the light of its health implication.
On the floor, unkempt, untidy, and I am expected to use my hands first so as to be able to stretch my whole body to greet someone; that looks like a burden to me, but what about the many germs that can be contracted? I may not win this argument, due to the staunch views of conservatives who insist it is tradition and should be adhered to, but I want to bring to your notice that we risk a health hazard when we insist on the original variant of prostrating as a sign of respect.
One prominent adage in Yoruba posits, idobale kin se iwa loosely translating to prostrating is not a sign of good character. The fact that I give you a full stretch of myself to greet you does not infer respect at all; I may even resent you but out of respect for tradition, prostrate for you.
I think there is a need to rethink the circumstances that warrant prostrating, while not losing the old tradition of the Yoruba Kingdom too.

Opinion: Nothing Good Will Come Out Of This Senate | By: Efe Paul Azino

Photo published for EXCLUSIVE: Despite cash crunch, Nigerian Senate illegally buying N4.7billion exotic cars for...
There is a mad man in Tanzania. Less than three months after assuming office as president, John Magufuli has left no one doubt about the seriousness of his mission. One of his first moves behind the rudder was to slash the budget of the typically lavish state dinner that marked the opening of parliament by 90 percent, redirecting the savings to the equipping of hospitals and building of roads. Magufuli has banned public travel for ministers and government officials and placed a moratorium on the purchase of first class tickets. He has pulled government meetings, workshops and conferences out of swanky hotels and restricted them to public buildings, going a step further to set austere benchmarks for refreshments at such engagements.
There are mad men in Nigeria. Seven months, one combustive leadership tussle, zero gestures of seriousness after, the Eighth Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has decided to purchase 120 brand new vehicles, at the speculated cost of N4.6billion for oversight functions of 65 committees, an amount which constitutes a part of its approved annual budget of N130billion. This is coming against the backdrop of a continuing drop in oil prices, persistent petrol shortages, threats by governors to cut minimum wage, looming increases in electricity tariff and the pump price of fuel; against the backdrop of one of those rare occurrences – a near unanimous agreement between the leadership and the led, on the need to make sacrifices in the short term, to cut waste and free up resources for areas of utmost priority. A concern the senate, by its recurring rhetoric, will have us believe that it shares, but one its actions have consistently betrayed.
There are no mad people on the streets. No heads shaking vigorously, rage traveling out of bellies, spittle blowing in the wind, voices borne by fury screaming ‘buy those cars and see what happens.’ This absence of madness is perhaps the consequence of an abiding variant. The kind directed at keeping landlords at bay and children in school. The “We’re never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy,” variation needed to secure rice and stew and get petrol to keep the lights on. This present madness, expended on who voted for Buhari or who supported Jonathan diatribes, distracts the mind and chips at the will, leaving the bulk of the people without enough rage to reverse the madness of the senate, to insist on the madness of Magufuli.
So the senate will buy its cars and there will be no significant consequence. It has reached into the rickety laws it was elected to fix to extract a justification for its profligacy. It may have a legal basis for this expenditure, but it will never have the moral ground from which to wield it. Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, in his response to this issue, insists the senate has been frugal and responsible in its spending and that “…certain expenses and purchase are normal in government.”
Yes, the senators exist in an alternate universe where frugality has an altogether different meaning. And no, Senator Abdullahi, normal is not what is expected under abnormal conditions such as these. What is expected is madness, madness of the Magufuli strain, radical reductions in public spending, every opportunity seized to make symbolic gestures of collective sacrifice with leadership at the helm of it. Symbolic gestures of sacrifice like we will not buy these cars, like we will in fact reduce the number of cars in the convoy of the senate president and his deputy, like we will make do with our motor vehicle allowance which we shall in fact cut. Nothing else suffices as ‘frugal’ and ‘responsible.’ Definitely not N4.7billion.
Nigerians have hardly expected serious leadership from the national assembly, and this senate, for all its rhetoric, reinforces why. The signs are ominous. Nothing good will come out of this senate.

Ooni of Ife slammed for kneeling in church. His reaction is epic!

The Ooni Of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi who came under fire yesterday by a publication for kneeling in church during a thanksgiving service held in his honour at the Paul’s Anglican Church, Ife has said his act is not regretted adding that no king should be equated with God.
A statement from the Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Ile Ife, Mr. Moses Olafare reads thus.
“It is an unacceptable sacrilege to equate Ooni’risa or other king to the almighty God. God Is the creator of mankind and it is God that made it possible for the enthronement of any king.

“The attention of Ile Oodua has been drawn to a publication released Wednesday 16th 2015 by an online medium known as NEWSPUNCH in which His Imperial Majesty, Ooni’risa & Arole Oodua Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi(OjajaII) was criticized for bowing to God.

“God remains the highest, the king of kings who has kept all kings alive and has made it possible for me to be crowned as the king of the source of Yoruba civilisation.

“I have no regrets whatsoever for kneeling down to exalt the almighty God who did not only create me, but also kept me alive, saw me through all the storms in my, life-journey and eventually crowned me as the custodian of Oodua race.

“This act of equating me to God of gods of king of kings and the sole owner of the universe is a wicked sacrilege planned to embarrass the throne. My emergence as Oba has been made possible only by the almighty Olodumare to whom I remain eternally grateful.”

Guus Hiddink to replace Jose Mourinho?

Reports suggest that Guus Hiddink will be named Chelsea’s interim manager following the sack of Jose Mourinho on Thursday. The Dutchman whose first managerial spell at the club was in February 2009, after the sack of Luiz Felipe Scolari, after seven months in charge will be in charge until the end of the season.

Official Chelsea statement confirming Mourinho’s sack

Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have today parted company by mutual consent.
All at Chelsea thank Jose for his immense contribution since he returned as manager in the summer of 2013.
His three league titles, FA Cup, Community Shield and three League Cup wins over two spells make him the most successful manager in our 110-year history. But both Jose and the board agreed results have not been good enough this season and believe it is in the best interests of both parties to go our separate ways.
The club wishes to make clear Jose leaves us on good terms and will always remain a much-loved, respected and significant figure at Chelsea. His legacy at Stamford Bridge and in England has long been guaranteed and he will always be warmly welcomed back to Stamford Bridge.
The club’s focus is now on ensuring our talented squad reaches its potential.
There will be no further comment until a new appointment is made.

Short Story: Pristine | By: Morountodun (Vol 3)

Read the first and second parts of the Pristine series here and here

“Dara, that your friend is like
the finest guy in camp, in my opinion,”
Kenny said in bed one afternoon after a
long, tiring lecture in the camp auditorium.
Surprised, Dara asked, turning on
her own bunk to face her, “David? Really?”

“Yes! And he likes you.”

“Of course. How else would we have
been friends?”

“I mean really like you.” Kenny emphasized in a way Dara thought
unnecessary. “I see the way he looks at you. He spends as much time as he can
with you, and has been bribing Taiwo and I by saving all three of us seats all
week since lectures began. He clearly adores you.”

Dara rolled her eyes. “He’s just a
nice guy. We talk a lot and that’s it. Don’t go reading meanings into nothing.”

“We’ll see about that,” she
snorted derisively, then gushed dreamily, “There’s just something about really
tall guys that aren’t skinny or fat, just well built like that. Most especially
when they wear glasses. Gives them this intelligent, sexy look.”

Taiwo, who had been quiet the
whole time—she was indeed brooding most of the time—dropped the magazine she
had been flipping through. Using her toes, she poked the back of Kenny’s
mattress suspended over hers and asked suspiciously, “You find Malik
attractive?”

Kenny bent to peep at her,
puzzled. “What? Malik? Of course
not,”
she replied, seeming a bit disgusted. Then she added with a chuckle, “He’s
not even that tall.”

When Kenny left for the bathroom
some minutes later, Taiwo told Dara with a nervous smile, “I know my sister
wouldn’t hurt me, but sometimes I feel like she gets with my boyfriend a little
too well.”

“Kenny gets along with everyone
well,”
Dara reminded her.
“Yeah. What do I have to worry
anyway? No guy would have me and want her instead.”
It struck Dara then, just how very
insecure Taiwo was. She was actually the smaller-bodied and lighter-skinned
twin, hence she might have seemed prettier, but many people found Kenny’s
friendlier nature more appealing and that apparently got to her. Dara didn’t
feel sorry for her, although she imagined it must be difficult for twins to
constantly be compared to each other. And in Kenny’s defense, she told Taiwo,
pretending to not notice the glare that followed, “Some guys aren’t just about
looks, you know?”

She fell into a brief nap that
afternoon, wondering what anyone would say about her too. Dwelling on how
people say her or if they liked her wasn’t really in her character, she simply
lived, vanity-free. And it had been working for her so far. Parade that evening
was a shocker to her, however, when the platoon voted and the commandant
approved…of Dara representing them in the Miss NYSC pageant.

“What?!” she had exclaimed,
horrified at the first person that suggested it before they voted.

“I’m not
even so tall. And I don’t know how to model or catwalk. Let’s not even make a
fool of ourselves,”
she had argued with them all, shaking her head while they
voted.
The platoon commandant tapped her
soldier and told her, “My friend. You suppose dey happy o, say everybody wey
dey dis platoon wan make you stand for them in this whole camp. Na becos dem
feel say you fit o. Ahahn, you no dey look mirror? See as you yellow, wey you
slim, wey you fine o! Na you go do am walahi. Make you go prepare your mind.”

Dara sighed. “What about costumes?
I didn’t bring any fancy clothes to camp now.”

“All of us na team, we go find
everything wey yo go use. No worry,”
the soldier assured her.
She wasn’t assured, though. She
went ballistic as David walked her to the hostel that night. “Can you imagine
them?!”
she fumed. “Many girls in the platoon and they chose me! I didn’t even
sign up for this, I’ve never thought of myself as a beauty queen for a second
in my life! We will lose the pageant and I’m not even going to be sorry!”

He only smiled quietly. When she
had let off enough steam, he told her, “Dara, you don’t even know how
incredible you are. And that’s what makes you even more beautiful.”

She was going to roll her eyes at
him, but when she looked up, he was staring at her in a strange way…like he had
meant what he said. At that instant, Dara wondered if what Kenny had said was
true. And after saying goodnight, she still felt his eyes on her all the way
till she got into the room, suddenly feeling self-conscious and weird at the
same time.

*******************
She had to learn to be vain, and
Taiwo was a pro at that. Every night after dinner, they went into one of the
empty hostel rooms and had brief grooming sessions before it was lights out.

“You have to be more confident
with that walk,”
Taiwo would say, demonstrating to correct Dara’s tense version
of a catwalk. “Feel sexy, be sexy.”

“But I don’t feel sexy, I feel like an idiot!” Dara would reply helplessly.
Kenny was always there too for
some moral support. She’s laugh at her and say, “Dara, how could you not feel
sexy, looking like you do? You have the body and you’re smart too. What more
could you possibly need?” Then she’d say wistfully, watching them practice,
“You even look more like Taiwo’s twin than I do.”
It had never occurred to Dara
that Kenny might just be envious of Taiwo’s looks too.
On the third day of practice, when
Dara finally decided to put her mind to it and actually made an impressive imitation
of Taiwo’s catwalk, Taiwo shocked her by firmly cupping her breasts and asking,
“Do you know what these are for?”

Puzzled, Dara shook her head while
Kenny giggled, watching her expression.
“So I figured. You don’t wear
push-ups?”

“Push-ups?”

“Bras. Push-up bras,” Taiwo
explained, srill holding on to them.
Dara shook her head again, shocked
and wondering what her boobs had to do with anything.

“They give you shape. They make
clothes hang beautifully on your body. When you walk, stop acting like you’re
ashamed of these God-given gifts. They’re yours to be proud of.”
She finally
let go.
“You don’t have to walk exactly the way I do. I have wider hips, you
more of boobs, so just enjoy being in your own body…feel yourself.”

“Okay,” Dara replied, pushing back
her shoulders and standing straighter.

“I bet your boyfriend enjoys
them,”
Taiwo teased with a wink.
“I had a guy once. All it took to
get anything from him was just to let him have a feel. Guys can be crazy like
thatm”
Kenny shared, shaking her head and laughing.
Dara smiled. “I’ve never had a
boyfriend. I didn’t want any distraction in school, now I’m looking forward to
it though.”

“Never? As in never? Where have you been? You don’t even want to know how many
guys I’ve been with.”

After some more practice, Dara
asked Taiwo, “You know a lot about modeling, how come you aren’t even
representing your platoon?”

She shrugged dismissively. She had
wanted to, and was actually one of the three girls nominated in her platoon for
the pageant but had had the least number of votes. Sometimes popularity
mattered more than skill.
Kenny, knowing what had happened,
gave her sister a sympathetic smile right before checking the time and telling
them, “It’s almost nine. They’ll cone send us to bed in about three minutes.
Let’s continue tomorrow.”

************
Camp had gotten really busy,
series of activities were going on. Inter-platoon cooking, drama and dance
competitions gave almost everyone something to be involved in. Two of Dara’s
platoon members, both namesakes, dedicated their time to preparing her for the
pageant, however. Tolu boy was a professional stylist with a UK degree while Tolu
girl was a make-up artist. They pieced Dara’s outfits together and got her
likely test questions. They believed in her so much she became excited about it
all.
Even Gideon and Dan cheered her on
from home when she told them over the phone, although they found the idea
totally unlike her and therefore unbelievable at first. Their parents supported
too, after she lied that she had applied for relocation.
The excitement flew out the window
a day to the pageant when she went to mammy market to get her hair and nails
done. There was another customer in the salon who wouldn’t stop telling
everyone that cared to listen how prepared she was to clinch the Miss NYSC
title. She had everything planned, had brought all her outfits and accessories
from home, and had enough experience from other beauty contests she had engaged
in before. She had come to camp solely for this, and was absolutely positive
she’d win. She smiled a lot, batting her eyelashes and calling everyone
‘darling’, like a true diva.
The girl left when Dara’s hair was
halfway done, and terrified, Dara told Tolu, “I can’t do this. I obviously
don’t stand a chance.”

He gave her shoulder a gentle
squeeze. “Queens need brains too, not just looks. Yes, you do stand many chances.
Trust me.”

“Okay,” Dara sighed.
