Parents of Nigerian-raised Al Jazeera journalist calls on Egyptian authorities for their son's release

The parents of detained Al Jazeera journalist, Abdullah Elshamy are calliing on Egyptian authorities to release their son who has now been imprisoned for 253 days. The prosecutor for the case is expected to reach a decision this week on whether to release the 93-day hunger striker or renew his detention. Speaking yesterday, 23 April 2014, Lagos-based Elshamy Nusehy Elshamy and Thuraya Elshamy said their son, Abdullah Elshamy, is fighting not for himself but for a free media.
Elshamy Nusehy Elshamy told Al Jazeera that despite concerns about the health of Abdullah, his family are right behind him in his hunger strike: “My son is now 253 days without being taken to court; his hunger strike is now more than 90 days. Abdullah is not on the hunger strike for himself; he is doing it to protect free journalism across the world. I call on the Egyptian authorities to free my son and Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed.”

He also went on to say: “My son is my new teacher; he sets a great example of how self-belief can make anyone stronger. I pray that he goes and wins this battle.” Abdullah’s mother, Thuraya, said she supports her son’s fight for freedom. “I urge Abdullah to continue his hunger strike, because now it is not for himself, it is for freedom and for all his colleagues. My son is innocent and his loves his country of Egypt. He has always reported the truth; his motivation has always been humanitarian and professional causes.” Both of his parents say they support their son’s hunger strike: “Our son has lost a lot of weight, but his strength is boosted everyday by the solidarity of his colleagues from all over the world.”

Born in Egypt but raised in Nigeria, Abdullah works as a West Africa correspondent for Al Jazeera Arabic.
He is one of four Al Jazeera journalists detained in Egypt. Al Jazeera English correspondent Peter Greste and producers Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been detained since December 2013.  Their trial was adjourned again this week until 3 May 2014. Calls for their release have been made from the White House, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the European Union. Similarly public calls of support for the #FreeAJStaff campaign have been made from prominent media personalities with over 50,000 people supporting the #FreeAJStaff campaign, which has had over 1.1 billion impressions on twitter. Various media freedom and human rights groups have also issued statements, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Press Institute, Amnesty International and Foreign Correspondents’ Association of East Africa.

Inspire 101: Actor, Osita 'Pawpaw' Iheme turns author

One of Nollywood’s most “troublesome’ actors, Osita Iheme, fondly called Pawpaw has written a book to motivate students to achieve beyond their perceived limits. The book which is titled ‘INSPIRE 101′ is a collection of inspirational quotes by the celebrated filmmaker. It has been reviewed by Professor Pat Utomi, comedian, Ali Baba and Dimgba Igwe. Osita has also received the approval of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to print and distribute copies of the book to schools in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT Abuja). And it is also expected to form part of their library and research materials.
Adducing reasons for writing an inspirational book, the 32 year-old stated that it was a dream come true. “I pray and believe that the ‘Inspire 101’ (book) will have a direct positive impact on students and any other person that reads it. It is the fragment of my thoughts and beliefs that drove and elevated me from my ‘not too comfortable background’ to a better person in the society. People can move from the background of lack and insufficiency to become a beacon of hope and inspiration to others. As role interpreters, our fans erroneously believe that what we act in movies depicts our true self but this cannot be the truth; ‘Inspire 101’, which is a compilation of my original quotes, is a peep through the window of my soul.”

It's over! David Moyes axed as Manchester United coach

You all asked for it; via your tweets, (#Moyesout hashtag) facebook posts, placards, banners, comments etc. It wasn’t all about the fans, the club owners/Executives were fed up! The final straw which seemed to have broken the camel’s back was Red Devils’ 2-0 loss to Everton last weekend. 10 months after taking the reins from Sir Alex Ferguson as Manager of Manchester United club, David Moyes has been axed. He was sacked at a meeting with Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward at the club’s Carrington training ground today.
The 50 year-old who signed a 6-year deal with the club last year will be compensated with a whooping 30m pounds. Moyes who was in charge for 348 days lost 15 games and won just over half at Man United; giving him a win rate of 53%. Like I mentioned yesterday, Ryan Giggs is to take over as interim coach during their next game at home against Norwich on Saturday.
