Author and poet, Maya Angelou dies at age 86

Renowned poet and author of best-seller “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, Maya Angelou has passed on. The award-winning writer was found dead by her caretaker in her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina this morning, May 28, 2014. She was aged 86. The Civil rights activist who had been struggling with health problems in recent weeks was the first African American woman to be honoured with a Pulitzer Prize.

Asides writing a couple of inspirational quotes, her acting career has included roles in numerous plays, films, and television programs. Angelou has over 30 honorary degrees from universities around the world. She has written published 7 autobiographies, 3 books of essays, and several poetry books.

"I have never heard a bang or boom like that". Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi on how he escaped Jos blast.

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi was among the few lucky people who escaped last week’s bomb blast that left over 150 killed at a market in Jos, Plateau State unharmed. The Jos-born footballer told BBC he left the popular market barely 15 minutes before the first blast rocked the area.
“I am very, very lucky, just by the grace of God. It was just like an ordinary day. Happy faces and friendly warmth that make you feel happy to be back home. We had gone to the railway market to get something. I think it was 15 minutes later when we heard the loud blast from the place. And suddenly, people were just running. There was chaos and pandemonium. There was smoke, I was confused, lost and just wondered what had happened. I had no idea of what was going on and it was scary. All my life I have never heard a bang or boom like that.” He narrated.
Onazi who plays for Lazio of Italy added that he feels concerned about the security challenges in Jos and Nigeria as a country.

“I was born and bred in a peaceful Jos. I may be fortunate enough to live outside the place right now, but I still have my family and friends who live in the city. I always get worried when there are reports of terrible incidents there on a regular basis. It’s sad and depressing to live with this.” He concluded.

Surulere LGA Chairman, Hon. Tajudeen Ajide gathers momentum

Surulere Local Government Area has been one of the most distinguished Local Government Areas in the state and Nigeria at large. This can be confirmed by the numerous projects carried out by the current LGA Chairman, Hon. Tajudeen Ajide. The Europe-trained politician has continued to receive plaudits for transforming, uplifting and restructuring the socio-economic status of the local government since getting into office on October 2011.

 

Projects carried out during his administration include construction of toilets and drainage, award of school materials and aids for students, construction of aesthetic facilities for the people, down to provision of free medical facilities as well as winning competitions with his formidable Surulere team around Lagos, the list is endless.

 

To bridge the gap between the governed and the government, the dogged man has however created an online platform to connect and communicate with members of the public. As it is now, he’s also not unlikely the only Local Government Chairman in Lagos who is still a tenant. “I feel its more important to serve the people as that’s the major reason I came into office in the first place”. 7 year-old wonderkid, Ozzy Bosco appointed LAWMA ambassador

Two endorsement deals and still counting! The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) led by the Managing Director, Mr Ola Oresanya has endorsed Africa’s number kid music star, Ozzybosco has her brand ambassador. The deal was signed on Monday 5th May 2014.  

 

OzzyBosco and Lagos State children will be working on a campaign tagged “Keep Lagos Clean”. His primary assignment is to carry younger generations along whilst serving as Change Agents in the on-going fight against filth and environmental pollution in Lagos State.

OzzyBosco will also be partnering with the Local Governments and Local

Council Development Areas (LCDA), which would ensure that schools and children in their locality participate fully in the campaign exercise. The communities within the Local

Government Area in focus shall be selected at random and replicated inallthe LGAs and LCDAs in Lagos State.

 

LAWMA endorsement makes it the second brand ambassadorial appointment for the “Tinini” crooner in about six months, having been made “Tigo Milk Brand Ambassador”(CWAY Foods and Beverages) only a few months ago.

In Nigeria, It's NOT a Happy Children's Day.

First of all, I’ll like to wish every children on planet earth a Happy Children’s day. Regardless of my post title, we can’t deny that May 27 has been set aside to celebrate children worldwide. So, If you’re a mother, sister, Father, brother reading this. My heartfelt prayer is for God to continue to keep our children, give wings to their dreams. May they grow in stature and wisdom and may they continue to lighten out faces with happiness.
Today makes it 43 days that over 200 Nigerian children were abducted in their school by members of terrorist sect, Boko Haram. Over 200 children whose only crime was to concede to the idea of education. Today, over 200 girls are in danger, over 100 parents and families are in anguish and pain. Every child has a right to education. Why should their cases be different?
In Nigeria, it’s NOT a happy Children’s Day. Where are these effervescent children we see, who should be home, running errands, taken to amusement places, visiting friends trying out new clothes, taking photographs or just being showered with love? We can’t talk to the terrorists, but we shouldn’t lose our voices to the government because it is its responsibility.
Today, I join my heart with parents whose faces have not known sleep since this sad news was broken to them. Parents whose attention are glued to their TV screens and radio day and night for news about the safe return of their children. Today I say a painful RIP to the mother who developed an heart attack and died after learning of her child’s abduction and those who might be going through an ailment, diagnosed with hypertension or probably hospitalized.
In Nigeria, it’s NOT a Happy Children’s Day, no child should be afraid to pursue a brighter future. There are low-key celebrations in some states today, learnt some children have even decided to boycott any form of fanfare. Some are wearing red today just to show solidarity; to stand by the miserable Chibok girls today.
In Nigeria, it’s NOT a Happy Children’s Day. We are deeply saddened. In Nigeria, it’s NOT a Happy Children’s Day. They have suffered enough. We join our hearts with families out there, pray and simply ask the government to help #BringBackOurGirls.
