Nigerian gets N11m in Quran contest

A Nigerian, Sulaiman Abdulkarim Isa has landed himself a cool Dh250,000 (N11m) cash for being the top memoriser of the Quran in the international Quran completion category at the 18th session of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA).
He edged out Saudi Arabia’s Omar Hussain Baeisa and Yemen’s Mohammed Khaled Yaseen who emerged second and third runner respectively. He was also named the “Islamic personality of the year”. The first and second runner ups got Dh200,000 and Dh150,000.

Women in Marketing Conference and Awards (WIMCA) 2014 set for inaugural edition.

The maiden edition of Women in Marketing Conference and Awards (WIMCA) 2014; an initiative of Awesome Communications, publishers of frontline brands and Marketing journal, Brand Communicator is set to hold in Lagos. Themed, “Inspiring Change in Marketing: Taking the centre stage”. This ground breaking event will take place at the Shell hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan Lagos, Come Thursday 31st of July 2014.
Speaking about the event, Joshua Ajayi, publisher of the magazine disclosed that, “WIMCA was borne out of the need to identify the challenges holding back female executives from attaining the zenith in their chosen career, and proffering workable solutions to those challenges. Dear Davido,
How are you today? Not too tired from last night’s performance, I hope? I’m sure you had a performance last night; you seem to have one every night these days. Pele. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown and, right now, you are the king of Nigerian Pop. I never thought the day would come when I would make that statement, but here we are and I shall repeat: You. Are.The. King. Of. Nigerian. Pop. Music.

I am sure you are wondering why I’m writing you a letter to state what’s pretty obvious to anyone who walks the streets of Lagos, goes clubbing or ventures near a party scene: Your music is on constant play. How did you do it ehn, David, how? See, when you came on the scene, I gave you zero chance of survival. I was so sure you were another excitable wannabe with an overdose of youthful exuberance, coming to foul the air with pathetic music fit only for numbskulls and bimbos, much like you. That’s what I thought and some three years later, here I am tendering my unreserved apologies for stupidity. How could I not have seen it?

How could I have lumped you with the one-hit-wonder crowd? How did I not know anything of your hard work and laser focus? How did I so quickly relegate you to the rubbish heap of Naija’s ‘jollof music’ when I have always argued that there was a place for ‘nonsense-making’ music in every society? See, I didn’t even think that you could succeed at making ‘disposable’ music. Ha!

Part of my problem, of course, was that your father has a lot of money. No, I am not envious. Yes, my father does not have a lot of money. Again, no; I do not want your father’s money. And yes, I was truly irritated when you came onto the scene because your father had a lot of money and you could bloody well buy a studio and croak into a microphone if you so desired. Being the child of a rich man has its drawbacks and one of them is that children of rich people are often seen through the prism of their parents’ money.

I saw you as another boy with a money-miss-road father who has failed at everything else and now wants to try his hand at music because, as a qualified loser with a sense of entitlement, you assumed anyone could sing. I judged you on first contact. Chai, I have been foolish! David, omo baba olowo, you will have to reach deep within your soul to find forgiveness for me.

Truth be told you can’t really sing, David. And you can’t really dance either. And your stage performances, the ones I saw, were like a dress rehearsal for a mini-area boys’ assault. You were all over the place like an eager monkey, prancing around the stage like an adulterous p***s. But who says a great voice is necessary for success in Pop music? Who says every Pop artiste has to be a Michael Jackson and moonwalk?
Fela didn’t have a great voice and could not dance to save his life, yet he made great music. And it isn’t as if you were claiming to be a nightingale. What people like me could not see in you was pretty obvious to the millions who appreciated your art: an art form’s essence is in its connection with an audience. What was it Mark Twain said again? “The public is the only critic whose opinion is worth anything at all”. Your ardent fans validate you and I-too-knows like me need to shut up and smell the agbalumo.
You are a bonafide Pop star, Davido. I finally accepted this reality recently on a drive from Lekki to Ikeja. It was around 11pm on a Friday and the DJ on Top Radio 90.9 was doing non-stop mixes of Nigerian music. It was shocking when I realised that one of your songs was played every five minutes. When did Davido make so many hits? Where was I when all this was happening? That was when I was informed of your hard work.
I was told how you spent almost a life-time in the studio while you were still in school. I was reliably informed that it is now possible to play an hour of your hits, whether solo or collaborations. I was made aware of how you have even changed the direction of your music with a song like Aye, infusing elements of Highlife music, in order to get everyone on the dance floor, no matter when or where it is played. Afterwards, they had to assist me in closing my mouth, which had been hanging open.

I shall now find a corner where I can eat this enormous humble pie.

Real Madrid writes Nigerian midfielder, Onazi Ogenyi

This looks more than a show of solidarity to me. Seems he’s on the UCL title defenders’ radar, moreso he wasn’t the only player who was injured in the just-concluded tournaent. Some had more grievous injuries. Well, maybe there are “no strings attached”.
Giant Spanish club, Real Madrid have written to console Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi over his injury which he sustained during Nigeria’s clash with France at Brazil 2014. Recall that the 21-year old suffered a fractured ankle following a foul from France midfielder Blaise Matuidi .
The letter which was penned by Emilio Butragueno reads thus.
“We have learned about your serious injury during the game you played against France. On behalf of our president Florentino Perez and those who work for Real Madrid, we’d like to wish you a smooth and speedy recovery, as a former professional footballer, I know you are going through a difficult time but I’m utterly convinced that eventually, you’ll be back to full fitness to help your team achieve its goals next season.”

NFF President, Aminu Maigari Impeached

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari has been impeached by members of the executive committee of the football federation for “financial misappropriation, misapplication and maladministration.”.

This is coming few days after the administrator resumed his office following FIFA intervention in Nigeria soccer-related activities. The impeachment notice was signed by 8 out of 13 members of the committee.

Missing Algerian Flight crashes in Niger

An Air Algerie flight with 116 people on board which has been missing for few hours now has crashed in after flying through violent storms. It was reportedly found near Niamey, the capital of Niger. The Flight 5017 lost radar contact 50 minutes after takeoff from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. It was supposed to have landed at Algiers’ Houari Boumediene Airport a few hours later.

A statement from Swiftair reads: “Swiftair informs that an MD83 of this company, operated by Air Algerie, took off from Burkina Faso at 0117 Z for Algiers and expected arrival time 0510 Z but has not reached its destination. Until now there has been no contact with the aircraft.

“At this moment, emergency equipment and personnel of the company are working to find out what happened and as we get more details about what happened we will issue new releases.”
