CNN International launches Smart Business

CNN International today announced the launch of Smart Business – a new weekly feature segment that will profile the trailblazers using innovative new approaches and the latest technology to create new business opportunities. From September 3, Smart Business will air on the network during the recently-launched The Business View with Nina Dos Santos and World Business Today so that it reaches Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia prime-time audiences. Each week the segment will feature a different company or industry personality who has broken the mould in the world of business to thrive in a digitised and connected world.
By watching Smart Business, viewers will learn first-hand about a wide range of workplace innovations on topics as diverse as digital advertising, supply chains, business intelligence and technical literacy to name a few. The first Smart Business segments will include: Seattle-based pioneer Blab, which is using technology to predict what conversations will happen on social media; co-working space The Factory, Berlin’s first major start-up hub; and UK company Decoded, whose coding courses help employees unlock the digital world. Each report will explain how the company or individual harnessed opportunities through digital innovation, illustrate the change to the wider marketplace, and in the process solve age-old problems of doing business.
Online, a dedicated microsite will supplement Smart Business video content with in-depth stories, Q&As and opinion pieces as well as infographics and data visualisation.
“Smart Business will give viewers the inside track on what happens when industry leaders use technology and a fresh approach to develop brand new business opportunities,” said Mike McCarthy, Senior Vice President, Programming, at CNN International. “Covering innovative thinking from all around the world, Smart Business is the perfect complement to CNN’s business programming. How To Spot A Fake Abuja Big Girl | By: Chinenye Ugonna

If you have lived in Abuja for more than a year, you should understand the term “fake Abuja big girl” or FABB. These are the girls who are usually very attractive, own all the Apple products in this world, live in N1million flats in Maitama, but if you check their background, their parents are struggling in their various villages.  Enough said, let me educate you.

(1.) Bleached skin and tattoos:
These days, most girls think they have to be “white-skinned” to be beautiful. They go as far as taking injections to perfect their skin. They then get tattoos to complete the look. These girls have to sell their market. When you check their background, their families are as dark-skinned as they come but these girls look more like Black or White era Michael Jackson.

(2.) Fake accent:
This is another common trait. FABBs roll their tongues like their lives depend on it. Every vowel, irrespective of the word, is followed by an ‘R’: Jos become Jors; Taxi, Tarxi; Abuja, Abujarrr.

(3.) Long ‘human’ hair:
If they do not have the Brazilian hair that reaches their butt, they haven’t arrived. Picture the combo: bleached skin, fake accent and long Brazilian hair. Most of these girls don’t even have up to N10, 000 in their bank accounts but they have to impress. All na packaging!

(4.) Own the latest android phones:
This draws me back to a Nigerian movie I watched weeks ago. Funke Akindele’s character sold her bed just so she could buy an Android phone. She preferred to sleep on a bare mattress on the floor than use her regular Nokia phone just so she could impress the guys and catch “proper fish.” This is exactly what FABBS do. They would own the iPhone 5s, S4, iPad. Before the iPhone6 is out, they already have it yet they don’t have regular jobs. So where do they get all that money from?

(5.) Don’t invite you to their houses:
FABBs never want you to know where they live; it would ruin the illusion of their prosperous lives. Picture this, as a guy, you meet this pretty light skinned lady, who owns all the nicest phone and tablets, maybe drives a car if the hustle is tight; long Brazilian hair and a little cash in their bank account. As a guy, you believe you are toasting or dating a girl who has money. So, why would she invite you to her “face me I face you” to spoil her packaging?
Everybody’s hustle is different but that of the Fake Abuja Big Girl is the realest; take note.

Germany beats Nigeria to claim U-20 Women’s World Cup

This year is really for the Germans. A month after their men claimed the 2014 World Cup title in Brazil, their women are basking in glory again. A late strike by Lena Petermann handed them the FIFA U20 Women World Cup trophy. The finals which took place in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in Canada ended 1-0 lastnight.
An excited German coach, Maren Meinert spoke after the match. “Obviously, we never expected to be standing here as champions considering the teams we had to play against, we’re especially proud and happy to be here, to have achieved such an amazing thing.”
Nigerian coach, Peter Dedevbo rued missed chances, “We did our best to see that our image was redeemed. We had opportunities to win this match in the first half. We created chances, but we couldn’t take them. Germany had their chance and they took it. We had an opportunity in the finals, and we threw it away. My players had an opportunity to wrap it up, and they threw it away.”
Falconets striker, Asisat Oshoala who netted a total of 7 goals clinched the Most Valuable player award at the tournament. She also won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards.

Sad! Cameroonian striker killed by object thrown by fans in Algeria

24 year-old Cameroonian striker, Albert Ebosse passed away yesterday August 23, 2014 after being hit by an object thrown by fans in the stands. The incident happened shortly after he scored the only goal for his club. The match which was held at the Tizi Ouzou stadium, Algeria was between JS Kabylie and USM Alger.

He was rushed to a hospital close to the match venue but unfortunately died from severe injuries on his head.

Meanwhile, the Algeria National Professional League has ordered the immediate closure of the stadium.

Ebose scored 17 goals from 31 appearances and was also the top scorer in the 2013/2014 Algerian Premier League.

Official statement on 2face's Dad death

Here’s a statement from The Idibia family confirming the death of their patriarch Michael Agbo Idibia.

With sadness in our hearts, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing on of our father, brother, uncle and in-law, Michael Agbo Idibia, a native of Okpokwu Idumoga in Benue State.Born on July 25, 1946, Mr. Idibia is an alumnus of Kansas State University, USA, and retired from the Ministry of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State. Survived by wife, Mrs. Rose Owoyi Idibia, children: Steven Idibia, Innocent ‘2face’ Idibia‎, Hyacinth Idibia and Oche Idibia, grand-children, and siblings.‎ Burial arrangements will be announced by the family. We plead with the media and the general public to respect the privacy of the family in this difficult time.

Award-winning singer, Innocent ‘2face’ Idibia’s father Mr Michael Idibia has passed on. He died this evening at an Abuja-based hospital after an unsuccessful battle with prostrate cancer. 2face disclosed 2months ago that he was diagnosed early and had started treatment.

Real Madrid rejects Barcelona's bid for Angel di Maria.

The world would be surprised if they agreed. UCL Champions, Real Madrid has turned down Spanish giants, Barcelona’s bid to sign their winger Angel di Maria for £48m. The offer was instantly rejected by Madrid president, Florentino Perez.
The 26 year-old has been on many clubs’ radar ever since he requested to leave the Catalans after failing to agree new terms on his current contract. One of such clubs is PSG who later called time on their pursuit because he was too expensive. The Argentine has reportedly told Manchester United’s new signing, Rojo that he wants a move to the England club.
