Opinion: A New Life Resolution? | By: Charly Boy

  It seems like it’s a few seconds ago that we all exchanged HAPPY NEW YEAR pleasantries, amidst fireworks and all we did with it, armed with different new year resolutions.
Like play, January is winding up, or is it down?
My guy, how many times have you made New Year resolutions that you didn’t keep?
People make New Year resolutions because it brings hope for the future. Everyone starts the New Year with good intentions of making right the things that went wrong in the previous year. It is a way of setting a personal goal or target and whether we can achieve them or not, it gives us something to look forward to, and work on (hopefully).
Many of us may not know this but the tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates all the way back to 153 B.C. The month of January is named after Janus, a mythical god of early Rome. Janus had two faces — one looking forward, one looking backward.
This allowed him to look back on the past and forward toward the future. On December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking backward into the old year and forward into the New Year. This became a symbolic time for Romans to make resolutions for the New Year and forgive enemies for troubles in the past. And thus the New Year’s resolution was born! Till date we keep that tradition of reflecting on our past and trying to improve our future.
For me,  as long as I keep striving for my today to be better than my yesterday, every day is my new year or should I say, my new day and am resolved in becoming a much better person today than I was yesterday.
I can’t stop always wanting to smell better, be wiser, and make better decisions; so it is continuous work in progress.
A lot of people make New Year resolutions, some are able to achieve it and others fall back on the same old habits and stuff.
We all have our shortcomings, don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with having a list of goals written down somewhere or a mental note you’ve made in your mind. While it’s good and also important to have something to strive for within the next 12 months, goal-setting has its limitations and we must understand that in order not to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves especially when we fail to achieve those goals.
I believe that the best way to make and achieve New Year resolutions is by taking a holistic look at our lives: finances, health, relationships, spirituality, etc.
We need to discover what tools and techniques each one of us individually needs to achieve set targets.
It is also extremely important to set your own goals and not your neighbour’s or your friend’s. If your goal is not realistic it can NEVER be achievable. How do you set a ‘fly’ goal when you have not even started to crawl, stand, walk or run? One steady, calculated step at a time is it, not ten ruff shoddy ones that lead nowhere or even fall you down thereby feeling a sense of failure which consequently makes people resign to fate.
I remember when I was trying to quit smoking, and every time I made the new year resolution to stop, I failed until I began to reset my mind and instead of making new year resolutions, I started making New Life resolution each and every day and that has helped me achieve my targets. Am beating my nicotine habit, am not there yet, but am on my way as that’s the only vice I really have.

The key to successful goal-making is not to be hasty when you do it. Make resolutions you’ve thought through and are willing to dedicate your time and energy to it. Abeg, don’t make resolution after coming from a party, or after getting high. E no go work o. If you’re not 100 percent committed to your goal, the possibility of staying motivated is not in your favor.

Policeman arraigned for posting Lionel Messi's passport on snapchat.

Emirati JM, a policeman is presently on trial for breaching the privacy of Lionel Messi during the soccer star’s visit to Dubai weeks ago. The officer filmed and posted a video of himself on social media with the 28 year-old’s passport. The Argentine was in Dubai to receive the Player of the Year award at the Globe Soccer Awards. When Messi arrived and he wanted to take a photo with him , he was turned down by his bodyguards as the latter was exhausted from the flight. He then went to the passport control desk and saw the Barcelona player’s passport there, he picked it up and shot a video of himself while holding it. 

He posted it on Snapchat with the caption:

“This is Messi’s, he is here in Dubai, what do I do? Shall I burn the passport or just put it back! Ok Ok you can go!”
Albeit, the video has since been deleted from snapchat. Looks like he’s about to get more than he bargained for. JM who maintained that it was all a joke told  prosecutors he sought the permission of Messi’s bodyguard, who was standing next to the passport control desk. He saw him as he spotted the player’s passport.

“He was standing there so I spoke to him in English and asked him if I could take a picture of myself with the player’s passport and he said yes. I didn’t take his permission — he was there but didn’t see what happened. I have no idea how it got circulated. I was just kidding and had never done this thing with anyone else before. I was wrong and I promise I would never repeat such a behaviour,” said JM.
An Emirati policemean who saw him said he was patrolling the private jet area when he sighted the accused. “It was 4am when I saw him still present and my colleague asked him to go home, then my colleague and I left to resume our checks ahead of the plane landing. I don’t know why he did that, he knows it’s not allowed. We all would love to have a picture with Messi but it’s not allowed,” he said.

JM who confessed to the charge will know fate this month.

LMC splash Super Eagles with dollars after Niger rout.

For their impressive display against Niger on January 18, 2016, the League Management Company (LMC) has presented a cash gift of $10,000 to the home-based Super Eagles. Recall that the squad, thrashed their neighbours 4-1 at the beginning of their CHAN 2016 campaign.

The presentation was made at a dinner organised by the Nigerian Chancery in Rwanda, the 2nd Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“The LMC, club owners and all the stake holders of the league appreciate your excellent display tonight (Monday). We are proud of the team. You guys have been good ambassadors of the league and I have been mandated to present this cash as reward for your hard work,” The chairman of the LMC, Shehu Dikko said.

Bizzio Musicmad, a staunch fan of Arsenal FC took his support for the Gunners to an all new height as he exchanged vows with his wife in a full Arsenal kit. He added that getting his wife’s backing wasn’t such an uphill task.

“My wife is from Woking and she is awesome. “She let me get married in my full Arsenal kit! Maybe I just got lucky.” he wrote on Facebook.

When Failure is not an Option | By: Tony Ogunlowo

 

‘When the going gets tough…’, sang Billy Ocean in 1985,’…the tough get going’.
‘Tough times do not last, tough people do’, said the late Rev Robert H Schuller, author of the bestselling book of the same title in the 80s.
At the time of the Apollo 13 1970 crisis in 1970, NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz was reputed to have said, ‘failure is not an option…we’re bringing our boys home’.
Man is the most resilient creature ever created; we can survive anything and bounce back, no manner what the problem; bankrupts are able to pick up and make better businesses, refugees who have lost everything in conflicts are able, after a few years, to rebuilt their lives, after terrible illness we are able to get back on our feet again. We are also the most adaptable creature and can  live anywhere –  out in space, in the wastes of the artic, the jungles of South America, the deserts of the Sahara – anywhere!
We are created to be able to withstand anything or endure anything without losing a speck of our personality.
Life is an adventure. You don’t know what is around the corner; one minute you can be rich and powerful and the next you can be languishing in Kirikiri prison, stripped of all dignity. 
Such is life.
The trick is to make oneself resilient enough to be able to withstand the slings and arrows that life throws at us whilst at the same time keeping the show on the road.
If an area boy can wake up every morning, under a bridge, to embark upon his day, not knowing which way it’s going to turn, hustling, stealing to stay alive, without giving up on life, why can’t we?
It doesn’t matter what you’re going through there will always be somebody else going through worse – and they manage to keep on going, so why not you?
No matter what ever life throws at us we must be able to ride the storm and carry on.
I personally have been to Hell and back, probably, more times than most people have had hot dinners but my resolute has always been the same – failure is not an option!
In a masochist kind of way I love it when things go wrong in my life. Why? Because it forces me to bring the best out of myself and prompt me to ask myself a very simple question – am I a loser or a winner?
Life is not for the faint hearted, the more problems I have, the more determined I am to surmount them and succeed. If there is not a way, you find a way! There is always a way out of any problem you might have. Don’t give up!
Losers cry and fall at every obstacle. A winner carries on, obstacles or not. Losers make excuses; a winner finds answers to problems, however difficult and moves on.
When we came into this world nobody handed us a handbook on how to live. Parents can try and teach us how to live and so also can society but it doesn’t mean we will live a perfect life; life is an unwritten tale with no rules and you have to make your own story up as you go along and of cause there will be pot holes in your path. And when things go wrong, which by the Law of Averages they will, you have to be ready with Plan B to pick yourself up.
I’m not a prayerful person but I live by a simple mantra/prayer – “nothing but the will of God will stop me, I’ve come this far and I’m going all the way!”
Alternatively, meditate on the poem ‘If ‘by Rudyard Kipling:
If you can keep your head when all about you   
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,   
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;   
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;   
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;   
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;   
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

Bring it on!
In a race there is only one winner and lots of losers. Only one person comes first! I’m not a loser. I can run a race and win no matter what life throws at me. I don’t believe in crying over spilt milk; if the proverbial has hit the fan  no amount of crying can change anything! Reassess your situation and get to work on picking yourself up! There is no such thing as a ‘no-win’ situation; there’s always a way and you need to find it.
In our modern society we face challenges and problems on a daily basis – even acts of God of which we have no control over.
We can either quit or win.
Ride the storm!
Things may be tough in your life right now, but it’s still not a reason to quit. Come up with an action plan, adopt a ‘swim or drown’ attitude, work hard and you’ll win.
Try and visualize yourself as a soldier. A soldier is given orders to carry out specific tasks that can be detrimental to his life and those around him. But he’s trained to disregard all this and carry out his orders irregardless; orders must be carried out no matter what – failure is not an option!
Learn to adopt a more militant approach to problem solving. Cast aside your ‘human side’ and become more ‘robotic’, programmed like a soldier to carry out orders. I call this the ‘swim or drown’ technique – if you don’t swim you are going to drown, simple as that!
They say it’s never over till the fat lady sings. As far as I’m concerned she can sing all she likes because it’s never over.
Believe it or not there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

CHAN 2016: Super Eagles fly past Niger

The Super Eagles of Nigeria  started their African Nations Championship campaign on a very impressive note today with a 4-1 victory over neighbours, Niger at the Kigali Regional Stadium.

30 seconds into the second half, Osas Okoro netted in a goal and gave the team the much needed morale. The last three goals; a hattrick was provided by Chisom Chikatara who came in as a substitute for Adeniji.
Niger fought back through Zakary Adebayor at the 80th minute.

Nigeria now tops Group C with three points.

9ice and Ruggedman end feud?

It seems the feud between rapper Michael Stephens popularly called Ruggedman and Abolore ‘9ice’ Akande has now become a thing of the past. The picture above was shared on social networking site, Twitter by the latter’s ex wife, Toni Payne.

“To see @i_am9ice wearing @RuggedyBaba 20th sept wear makes me very happy. I am proud of you two. Peace is everything” She wrote.
