Court denies Ibinabo Fiberesima bail.

Actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima’s attempt to get released on bail has met a brickwall. For those who are not familiar with her story,  she recently bagged a 5-year jail term  for ramming into the vehicle of a certain Dr Giwa Suraj along Lekki-Epe expressway in February 2006 and causing his death.

The AGN President had asked to be released on bail while the Supreme Court hears her appeal against the appellate court’s judgment in which her five-year sentence for manslaughter was upheld. Her lawyer, Victor Eden in an affidavit of urgency filed in support of her bail application, revealed that she had just undergone surgery to remove breast cancer and needed monitoring.
.

“It will be in the interest of justice and for her health and safety for the appellant to be admitted to bail pending the hearing and determination of the appellant’s appeal before the Supreme Court,” Eden said.
However, a three-man panel presided over by Justice Ndukwe-Anyanwu denied the mother of five bail yesterday, saying  the appellant failed to attach copies of the judgment that was delivered by the court on March 11th, 2016 which affirmed the five years jail term imposed on her.
The case was then adjourned till April 7th 2016 for the hearing of the bail application.

Roma footballer leaves World Cup medal in Italy kitman's coffin

De Rossi Italy Roma coffin medal World Cup
Roma midfielder, Daniele De Rossi is making the headlines for a bizarre reason.
The 32 year-old paid a very rare tribute to former Italian kitman, Pietro Lombardi who recently passed on at the age of 92.  After De Rossi finished training on Wednesday morning, he hurriedly drove to Florence to attend the funeral of his former kitman, and to the consternation of all, he left his 2006 FIFA World Cup winner’s medal in the deceased’s coffin.
Lombardi was 82 when Italy won the 2006 World Cup. His adeptness at cleaning the footballers’ shoes, earned him respect and admiration amongst the players. He was even  nicknamed ‘Spazzolino’ (toothbrush).
May his soul find repose. Amen

Short Story: Corporate Tensions | By: Jerry Cheimeke

“Heyy,
make sure you report early to the office tomorrow. Remember you’ve got a
journey to make.”
“But
Sir, wouldn’t it be better if I just took off from my place to the park, I
mean, to save time and….”
“Look
here, I don’t know how you want to do it. Even if it means waking up by five,
better report here at the office. You keep acting like you know it all. I don’t
like it, you must take my instructions….maybe I should contact  your previous employers, so I can find out if
you have a history of insubordination.”
Insubordination,
really?  I spent the next half a minute
trying to process what I had done wrong, by suggesting what I felt was a better
way to carry out the following day’s tasks. All that bile from his lips, just
for thinking on my feet! For this boss of mine, it was either his way, or the
highway.
I
knew that I should have got used to his vitriol and bile by now, but there was
something about his recent utterances that found their way to my bone. It was
probably the fact that it was past the day’s closing hours and so I had drawn
down my mental anti-employer defences, letting the venom from his words seep
in….or maybe it was because he had not paid my salary, ten days after
everyone else in the office had received their paycheques! He had cited
financial difficulties, but was it not I who did the most work the previous
month (even doubling as clerical staff on certain days), and had he not only
yesterday instructed the secretary to pay out some money into a relative’s bank
account, money which amounted to twice what I earned?
There
had also been the multiple episodes of being dressed down for errors as grave
as a double line spacing instead of single line spacing on a document. Failing
to mentally regurgitate one point out of ten points made by him during a
previous interactive session would usually lead to questions about the
authenticity of the excellent academic qualifications contained in my resume,
and on more than one occasion he had called me out for not making efforts to
bring more clients, reminding me that marketing prowess made up half of my
assessment points (never mind that the office had no marketing department). I
did not even want to recall the days that my one-hour mandatory break was cut
short after less than ten minutes, or the threats he made about my having to
forfeit a month’s worth of earnings in the event that I desired to leave. I did
not need to watch the movie “Horrible Bosses”; I acted it out every day.
I
would often go home depressed because of this man, and during my intense battle
with malaria I did not get so much as half a day off; as a matter of fact more
files were placed on my desk. I had long chosen to ignore, patiently waiting
for a much better opportunity, upon which I would withdraw my services without
so much as a warning. I took a deep breath and picked up my jacket, getting
ready to go face the city’s gruelling traffic, when he began to speak in his
trademark annoying tone:
“The
clerk said he got to Yaba with those documents by 4pm. Why so late?”
“Sir,
that was because he also had to get to Victoria Island earlier in the day. I
gave him both sets of documents, and he said traffic contributed to the
delay….”
“I
don’t know, there is so much inefficiency and incompetence on display here”, he
cut in. “Why didn’t you call him from time to time to track his movements? I
don’t care about the traffic situation, I want things done. I am many years
ahead of you in this business, you don’t know everything. I am beginning to
think I erred in hiring you.”
*********************
At
that moment, I decided that I had heard enough.
I
looked around the office. It was only slightly larger than an average living
room, the beautiful design of the firm’s website obviously made to deceive
desperate jobseekers before draining them of their souls once they got their
employment letters. It was nearly 6.30pm, and we were the only living creatures
in the building. I saw that he was putting some of his personal effects (such
as his food flask and mouth spray) into his bag, I quickly reached for the
office scanner, and in a matter of seconds, I had applied it to the left side
of his head with considerable force.
I
was fully aware that my stint as an employee in this low-level firm would come
to an end, but I was determined to make an impression. I gave him a cold stare
as he lay on the floor, clutching his head in pain, and I swung the scanner
again, only dropping it when I began to spot some red liquid on it. I then
grabbed the charger of the laptop assigned to me, that laptop which stood for
all the oppression I had endured in the last three months, and I wrapped the
chord around his neck, knotting it tightly and dragging him around the office,
but not before tying his hands behind his back with the ropes used in sealing
some of the office files . He would not stop screaming though, groaning in
typical work-hour-whining fashion, and I took hold of his jaw, clipping his
lips with the stapler I picked from his table, before proceeding to close up
shop with a maxing tape. Reasoning that I had to finish what I had started, I
pulled down the office printer, set his bloodied head on it, and forcibly
brought down the scanner repeatedly until I was sure that he had gone
motionless. Satisfied, I dragged his body to the door and hurled it down the
stairs, before returning to clean up all the blood left in the wake of my
notice of resignation.
***********
“Hey,
where has your mind gone?”
My
boss’ voice jolted me back to reality. It had all been a figment of my
imagination, another one of many times I had sent my boss to permanent sleep in
my head. Sure enough, I had a mind to put him away, but the law prescribed a
death penalty as punishment for what I desired, and I was not quite sure as to
whether the hangman would make a good host. I grinned as I picked up my bag and
jacket, ready to close for the day, when I heard him say:
“How
many times will I tell you to leave a line, and not two lines, between the
address of the recipient and the salutation? Incompetent thing, maybe I should
even further withhold your salary. Your appraisal is up for next month, and if
I must say, you have done nothing to merit a raise.”

The
fact that everyone else had departed helped the echoing effect of the words. I
looked up and saw him putting some of his personal effects in a bag. For me,
having no dignity was worse than making a necklace of the hangman’s noose, and
my boss’ statements stripped me of my dignity with each passing day. I stepped
to the right and reached for the scanner.

1 Nigerian Makes Time’s 30 Most Influential People on the Internet list

Nigerian American gossip blogger, Angie Nwandu has been named in Time’s 30 Most Influential People On The Internet list. Angie is behind one of the most popular gossip instagram accounts- TheShadeRoom. Angie Nwandu’s parents emigrated from Nigeria to the United States in the late 1980s; they later gave birth to her in 1989. Angie’s parents were in a violent relationship. Sadly, Mr. Nwandu murdered his wife and was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison in 2002. With no immediate family left to live with, Angie and her four sisters were incorporated into the Los Angeles foster care system.
Angie claimed to have been abused verbally, mentally and sexually. At 13, she was enrolled in a program for foster children called Peace for Kids. After receiving a full scholarship, Angie graduated from Loyola Marymount University in 2012 and went on to work as an accountant for a motorcycle company which stopped paying her after a while. By March 2014, Angie was without a job and left with nothing to do, she began posting gossip on celebs with the user name The Shade Room. Today she has made a mark for herself in the blogging niche and she’s earned a spot in Time’s list.
Below is Time’s feature on her.

“As more and more of our own daily interactions happen online, so, too, does celebrity drama. And Nwandu, 25, has made it her business to capture it. Two years ago, she started The Shade Room, an Instagram account and blog that aims to be like Page Six for celebrities on social media: a chronicle of who likes whose posts, who comments on whose photos, and who starts following (or better yet, unfollowing) each other. Since then, TSR has become a burgeoning media empire, replete with its own tipsters, staff (there are now fourfull-time employees), and advertisers—all of whom serve an audience of 3.9 million. And counting.—Nolan Feeney”

The Demise of the Yoruba Novel | By: Tony Ogunlowo

    yoruba novels
For those of us of a certain age, predominantly over fifty, there used to be a thing called a Yoruba novel. Yes, that’s right, a novel written entirely in Yoruba.
The one author whose books we read at one time or another in secondary school was no other than D. O Fagunwa whose novels “ Ogboju Ode ninu Igbo Irunmale “, “ Igbo Oludumare”, “Ireke Onibudo”, “ Irinkerindo ninu Igbo Elegbeje” and “ Aditu Oludumare” kept us enthralled with tales of supernatural folklore and tradition in way never before done. To ensure a wider readership his first book was translated into English by Wole Soyinka in 1968 as “The Forest of a Thousand Demons”
Sadly he died in 1963 and since his death there has been little or no attempt to encourage the genre back into mainline publishing. Nollywood has done a great job churning out Yoruba movies. There are Yoruba T.V programmes, plays, theatres and music but no original Yoruba novels.
One writer who tried his hands at writing an entirely Yoruba was the late Afolabi Olabimtan who published two novels “Kekere Ekun” in 1967 and “ Ayanmo” in 1973.
Sadly not even our higher institutions or publishing firms are doing enough to encourage the next generation Yoruba novelist/writer. In the past ,organisations such as the African Heritage Research Library and Cultural Centre in association with the Society of Young Nigerian Writers have  organised Yoruba Literature Writing Competitions in additions to arranging a ‘D.O Fagunwa’ night to celebrate the works of the late author and Yoruba fiction. Not much has come out of this.
The Yoruba language is spoken by more than 30 million people in Western Nigeria and in neighbouring countries of Togo and Benin. It is studied as a language in many of our universities and even abroad at SOAS University of London and in more than forty-seven universities in America.
There have been translations of such great works like ‘Things Fall Apart’ which was translated by the late Chief Wale Ogunyemi into Yoruba and titled ‘ Igbesi Aye Okonkwo’ and some others but very few originals.
With our younger generation growing up on a staple diet of Western fiction and indigenous published English fiction it won’t be long before the Yoruba novel becomes a relic of the past, joining a host of other forgotten languages, such as Latin, that books are no longer published in.
The advent of print-on-demand books, ebooks and blogs have made it easier for anyone to be published these days, reaching a wide audience spanning the world. Setting up a publishing house to publish Yoruba novels (- or any of the  other ethnic groups’) won’t be too difficult – or expensive. Existing higher institutions can offer classes in creative writing in Yoruba as they do English to encourage and help would-be writers. There is a potential huge readership base out there but no one to supply the demand.
And to Professor Wole Soyinka, and others out there, it’s not too late to pen that last great novel in Yoruba.

"They have weak players and they are cheating the fans." Roy Keane slams Arsenal

Roy Keane has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal following their exit from the Champions league last night. Keane believes their crop of players are week and their poor performances are have seen them cheat their fans. The Gunners crashed out of the competition after a they were walloped 5-1 by Barcelona on aggregate. They had a handful of scoring chances during both games but failed to convert them.
Speaking on ITV, the Irish ex footballer said: “It tells you that they’ve got a weak group of players, who can’t seem to lift it for certain games. No doubt the pressure has got to them in the last few months and for players at Arsenal football club who can’t deal with pressure, then you shouldn’t be there. The damage was already obviously done in the first game. There’s no great shame in losing 3-1, the effort was there – but I think Barcelona had switched off – but it must be hard for the manager to stomach that, and for the supporters when they see their players lift it for certain games, but they can’t do it for Watford at home, or Swansea at home.
“They’re cheating the supporters in that sense.”
