Court orders Onyeka Onwenu to apologise and pay N5m to Tony Okoroji
A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday Thursday, June 30, 2016 ordered veteran singer, Onyeka Onwenu to tender a public apology to Chief Okoroji in Vanguard Newspapers and www.vanguardngr.com, the website of Vanguard Newspapers and also pay the sum of five million naira as damages for defamation of character to Chief Tony Okoroji, former President of PMAN and Chairman, Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON). The judgement was delivered by Hon Justice I. O. Akinkugbe (Mrs.)
The pair have been on warring path for the past 4 years. It all started when the songstress published an article in the Vanguard newspaper edition of October 14, 2011 claiming Okoroji diverted N3m donated by the Cross Rivers State Government towards the final burial of Christy Essien Igbokwe. A move the latter described as a deliberate attempt to malign or defame him.
She reportedly also went to the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ikeja to report that he chased her around at night in a red Jeep in her neighbourhood with the intent to assassinate her.
Okoroji took the matter up, sued her and won the legal battle. Reacting to the verdict, Okoroji said he wished he never sued het. ‘Once again, as has happened several times before, the courts have come to my rescue proving that despite what may be said to the contrary, you can obtain justice in Nigeria. This has taken close to four years of going in and out of court but at the end of the day, I must thank Honourable Justice Akinkugbe who the Almighty has again used to do justice for her professionalism. I must also thank my lawyer, Mr. Justin Ige for his commitment and thoroughness’.
‘I have committed much of my life to fighting for the welfare of every musician in Nigeria and protecting the interest of all including Ms. Onyeka Onwenu. In the battle, I have spared myself no inconvenience or discomfort and countless times, I have had to risk my life, my reputation and the welfare of my family.
‘Working with my colleagues at COSON, we have made available to musicians across Nigeria hundreds of millions of naira as we set out with the building of the most professional, transparent and accountable organization in the history of the creative industries in Nigeria, something that was considered impossible just a few years ago.
He continued, ‘I wish I never had to take Ms. Onwenu to court. I consider every Nigerian musician including Onyeka a member of my extended family. Onyeka however left me with little choice. I went to court in self defence. Till today, I do not know what wrong I did to Onyeka Onwenu. As someone I considered a close colleague and friend, I was shocked at the level of hatred she had generated within herself to justify her all-consuming campaign of lies without foundation to destroy the one thing she knows that I cherish most; my integrity.
‘Every appeal to Ms Onwenu to reconsider what she was doing fell on deaf ears. Onyeka Onwenu has known me for many years. She knows very well that under no circumstance would I take a penny that does not belong to me but it suited her purpose to project me to the world as a thief. Onyeka knows that I am a stickler for rules and order but it made her happy to tell the world that I am lawless and a despot.
‘I know that very few people will believe this: three years ago, Onyeka Onwenu went to the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ikeja to wickedly report that I was chasing her around at night in a red Jeep in her neighborhood with the intent to assassinate her! This crazy report with absolutely no foundation was made a few days to my birthday (December 22) and Christmas.
‘I have little doubt that the intent was to have me suffer in jail during my birthday, Christmas and New Year. It took the wisdom of the police authorities and the intervention of elders in the music industry such as Evangelist Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi, Prof Victor Uwaifo and Dr. Ben Ofoeze to save me from the wickedness carefully planned for me by someone I had treated with so much respect and love as my sister and friend.
‘My commitment to my colleagues in the music industry, the whole of the Arts and the Nigerian nation remains unshaken. From the work we are doing, I see a very bright future soon for the creative industries in Nigeria. How many times have I passed this road? I hope my experience will be a lesson to young Nigerians that if you keep your hands clean and do your job diligently, it does not matter what wickedness any man or woman may contrive against you, the good Lord will protect you. The harder they come, the harder they fall’.

AMCON, Ben Murray-Bruce and a Healthy Dose of Common Sense | By : Simbo Olorunfemi
Nigeria, in the recent past, suffered a massive heart attack, leading to a monumental corrosion of her value system. The line between night and day has since blurred, and there is no way to clearly tell the difference; people are struggling to tell right from wrong. Last week, the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) rightly moved, in line with provisions of the law and common sense, to take over Silverbird Group, whose alter-ego and Chairman (?) is Senator Ben Murray-Bruce.
To the credit of the self-proclaimed Common Sense Advocate, his initial reaction was as to be expected of a man with an understanding of what is at stake. “In 36 years, Silverbird has grown, and like anybody, it will face challenges. Tough times don’t last. But we, as tough people, outlast them… Though the road ahead may be tough, I accept responsibility for ensuring we find the light at the end of the tunnel
and emerge from it,” he tweeted.
That is as it should be. But apparently, not so for the itinerant vuvuzelas who worship at the feet of anyone or anything to do with the aniti-heroic feats of the recent inglorious past. They never bother to school themselves on the details of any matter before taking up arms. All it needs is for anyone perceived to be an enemy of their enemy to suffer a misfortune. On whose account, it never matters to them. They arm themselves with daggers and swiftly take to the crossroads of the internet for the heads of all imaginary enemies. With calabash on their heads, they begin to come up with allegations that cannot even pass the scrutiny of any infantile cross-examination. They bring in political colouration, ethnic background and religious tendencies into the equation of a simple business relationship gone wrong.
It is difficult to tell, for sure, what part in the needless hoopla generated on the back of this routine operation by AMCON in ‘taking over’ Silverbird is to be situated on the corridors of ignorance, mischief, bigotry or a toxic mix of all. But it sure takes some audacity to display the level of illiteracy that has been on display over this matter in the public space. One would ordinarily expect sobriety, if not grief and outrage, that eleven billion naira that could be put to good use in addressing the nation’s infrastructural challenges is in the hands of a private entity, but since the divide between right and wrong has been uprooted, people have now lost the capacity for reason and rational behaviour.
…many debtors conveniently made away with the loans obtained from banks. To think that many of the banks which ‘failed’ sat on massive ‘assets’ which, properly managed, could have helped with a turnaround. But the rules then were different. So was it that a ‘National Bank’ with assets spread nationwide was not deemed too big to fail.
The story is all too familiar. It is as prescribed in the Rule Book, as written by Nigeria’s big men. If you cannot own a bank to rob the people, borrow as much as you can from one, with a mind of never paying back. It is an unwritten part of the deal. That is what makes you a Big Man in Nigeria. Back in the day, life was easier for the Big Man – he only needed to join hands with insiders to bleed the bank to death and simply walk away from the carcass. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will come in, buy the bank for one naira, and hand it over to the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Company (NDIC) to clear the mess.
For innocent minority shareholders, they lost it all. The staff were thrown into the streets. A depositor was only guaranteed fifty thousand naira (N50,000) of his/her deposit, at the times of liquidation. Though that has since been increased to two hundred thousand naira (N200,000), but what difference does that make? Except in the infrequent cases when enough recoveries were made to be able to extend further benefits to depositors, there was very little compensation in the cases of bank failure.
Disillusionment on the part of depositors is the reason why many never even bother to file applications to receive the guaranteed sum from the NDIC. At a point, it was estimated that as much as twenty-five billion naira (N25 Billion) of depositors’ funds were in the custody of NDIC, unclaimed. In the melee, however, many debtors conveniently made away with the loans obtained from banks. To think that many of the banks which ‘failed’ sat on massive ‘assets’ which, properly managed, could have helped with a turnaround. But the rules then were different. So was it that a ‘National Bank’ with assets spread nationwide was not deemed too big to fail.
That is why the idea of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) is very important and one that must be helped to succeed. Set up in 2010 in response to the looming banks failure at that time, and with an intended 10-year life span, AMCON was established as “a key stabilising and re-vitalising tool established to revive the financial system by efficiently resolving the non-performing loan assets of the banks in the Nigerian economy.”
Ten Banks were identified with crises in system assets and AMCON responded through the injection of ₦736 billion liquidity to buy up their assets. Among the ten Banks, only three – Mainstreet Bank, Keystone Bank and Enterprise Bank – were unable to still meet up and were finally acquired by AMCON and tagged as Bridged Banks. The original book value of the acquired non-performing loans was put at ₦4.02 trillion at a price of ₦1.76 trillion, with a commensurate issue of zero bond for the non-performing loans acquired.
As it has been canvassed elsewhere, there is a long list of other obligors which AMCON has moved in on to recover funds from, either through receivership or other lawful means. In spite of the limitation and pace of the judicial process which some are taking advantage of to frustrate the process of recovery, AMCON is doing well in exploring means to recover all that has been committed on behalf of the Nigerian people into these private entities.
By virtue of the introduction of this novel idea, not only was bank failure largely averted, a number of bank workers kept their jobs and depositors funds were fully secured, with only the shareholders losing their investments, as the share capitals had been wiped off by the virtue of the exposures.
Before long, it became apparent that acquiring the non-performing loans, at a discount rate, from the banks was the easy part. To get the debtors to fulfil their obligations to AMCON has become very difficult, with all manner of tricks and shenanigans being employed to frustrate the repayment process. Today, AMCON says it is being owed over N4.5 trillion by about 400 obligors when the 2016 budget itself is only all of N6 trillion!
So, in the Silverbird matter, AMCON is not doing anything new or beyond its brief. It has done so many things to make defaulters fulfil their obligations without success. It has published a list of defaulters in many newspapers in a bid to shame them into fulfilling their obligations, yet without success. AMCON is following laid down procedure in placing these businesses in receivership, as the only other option available to recover public funds tied down by the failure of these people to meet their obligations. This money belongs to the Nigerian people, if we must know. The only thing that has changed is that there is a new Sheriff in town that has given AMCON the free hand to fulfil its mandate, without interference from the top, as was the case in the recent past.
This is not really about Silverbird or Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, but simply about common sense.
The gang-up on AMCON either as a result of ignorance or mischief occasioned by politics is completely misguided. One wishes that AMCON had moved swiftly, in the early years, as it is doing now to take on more of these debtors, but the body language of yesteryears in which those who owe the Nigerian people freely roamed the corridors of power must have made things really difficult. To celebrate a man holding on to N11 billion which ought to be in the public kitty while deriding the efforts to make him pay back is difficult to justify. Common Sense demands that the right thing be done.

The SME Economy Conference – Focus On Innovation
As the summer of 2016 winds down, Emvirtue will debut its SME ECONOMY CONFERENCE/Exhibition on the 17th of September. Themed, “Impact For Nation Building “. The exhibition part of the conference will be the biggest SME focused exhibition in 2016.
The SME ECONOMY Conference has been designed to focus on Innovation with100 exhibition spaces for SMEs with creative and innovative products and services. This has been deliberately focused because of the believe by the organizers that Africa will only emerge from its third world status through the oxygenization of young business startups and entrepreneurs to create innovation.
The goal is to provide a significant platform where African entrepreneurs can be empowered to up-scale their operations, expand income generation channels, get trained, get mentored and get out of poverty. We will provide a platform for knowledge sharing and networking, bringing together reputable companies and brilliant minds which are set to transform lives in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.
Nigeria has to be the country to lead the #InnovateAfica campaign for all of the reasons that have become obvious even to the blind. It is based on that knowledge that Emvirtue is leading the advocacy to empower entrepreneurs through Government Intervention, Private Sector Participation, and Media Engagement.
The SME ECONOMY CONFERENCE/Exhibition intends to shoot out these three gaps and help create a system that works. Entrepreneurs can very well take advantage of this platform and get out there to the big market.

Those who criticise Messi have never kicked a ball – Maradona
Argentina legend, Diego Maradona has urged his compatriots to allow Lionel Messi enjoy his holiday. Shortly after Argentina lost to Chile at the Copa America final, the Barcelona player announced his retirement from international football, a decision that has left many shocked and pained till date. Appeals to have him reconsider his retirement are still ongoing especially in his country but the 29-year-old is yet to broach the topic again.
Maradona who also urged the striker to rescind his decision said in an interview with La Red on Wednesday said the world’s best footballer’s decision should be respected.
“Messi is telling us to stop busting his balls. With this Messi has told us ‘I am going on holidays, leave me alone and when you call me, I’ll think about it. I don’t want to talk about this anymore’. I think it’s great.
“These days everyone is a coach, everyone is a penalty-taker. No, it’s not like this. I see that people are meeting to talk about the subject, and I hear people who in their life have kicked one f**king ball and now they dare talk about football.
“Now when I see people talk about it, I change [the channel]. That’s it, it’s happened. We can’t go back. We have to construct a unified idea with Messi, but if he says no then we still have to put out a team on the pitch.”
